My story

[p]My brother Llyr is my hero. Being my big brother, he always was my hero (though I may never have admitted this to him) and would have continued to be had he had a perfectly ordinary, everyday life. But my brother’s life has been extraordinary for some time now and so it’s time to shout it loud...[/p][p]In 2005, while I sat on his sofa in Cardiff, which I was also crashing on at the time, Llyr had an epileptic fit in the bathroom while brushing his teeth. He was rushed to the hospital and after some tests and some scans over the course of the next few days, he was diagnosed with a low-grade glioma brain tumour. The tumour was inoperable and would need to be monitored every six months. [/p][p]For many years Llyr got on with his life and really lived it; bravely, stoically and always with a smile on his face. It never got in the way of him doing the things he loved - Glastonbury, football, music, DJing with our sister Heledd and taking the **** out of his little sister at every given opportunity - he may have had to suffer some huge changes, but that was never one of them. It was hard, it was scary, but he just got on with it. [/p][p]Things changed in June this year when we were told that the tumour had become high-grade and that we should prepare to say goodbye. But still today, Llyr continues through this journey just as he started it - with courage, dignity and humour. And yes, he still takes the p*** out of his little sister. DAILY.[/p][p]So I’ve decided to run the London Marathon. Which is by far the stupidest idea I’ve ever had. Llyr thinks it’s hilarious. Obviously. [/p][p]The Brain Tumour Charity is the world’s leading brain tumour charity and the largest dedicated funder of research into brain tumours globally. Committed to saving and improving lives, they’re moving further, faster to help every single person affected by a brain tumour. They are set on finding new treatments, offering the highest level of support and driving urgent change. Over 5,000 people lose their lives to a brain tumour each year. Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40. Despite this of the £500m spent on cancer research in the UK every year, less than 2% is spent on brain tumours. [/p][p]My extraordinary brother has lived an extraordinary life. And I couldn’t be prouder of him. He is my hero - now and always. I hope I can be his hero for 5(ish) hours in April. Even though he finds it hilarious. [/p]
