My story

[p]Hey, my name is Ollie and I'm running the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon for The Health Tree Foundation, which is a charity that works in partnership with the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust. In particular I am fundraising for the Maternity Bereavement Suite appeal, which is funding towards building a special bereavement suite on the maternity unit at Scunthorpe General Hospital for parents who lose a baby. [/p][p]I have chosen this amazing charity and appeal when a work colleague of mine recently lost a grand-child soon after birth earlier in 2018, and the support, help and care from the maternity staff at Scunthorpe General was simply inspiring. She and her family have been raising money for the appeal since and, with her being a good friend, I wanted to help out in any way I could too. [/p][p]I entered into the London Marathon ballot at the beginning of 2018 but, having spoken to other people who had applied many times before, I thought I would have no chance of getting in. I returned home from work on Monday 8 October knowing it was the week when we all found out if we had been successful or not, and I turned over the booklet to peer through the cellophane protecting it to see a letter "U". I had seen social media posts earlier in the day about those who had not got in, and the word "Commiserations" was on their booklets. I immediately thought, upon seeing my booklet, that there was no "U" in "Commiserations" but that there was a "U" in "You're in"... I therefore ripped off the cellophane to see those latter words staring right back at me, and it is a moment I will never forget.[/p][p]With it being a ballot place you can do the race without running for a charity if you wish, but that was never a thought in my mind. Though I have done many 5k, 10k and half-marathon (including doing the Great North Run twice to raise money for Magic Moments for Autistic Children) races in the past three and a half years, I have never previously done a marathon. The London Marathon, for me, is the perfect one to do as your first, and I cannot wait to do the event and to challenge myself at a distance I have never ran before. It will be a truly special and memorable day.[/p][p]My training will begin in the New Year, and I cannot wait to get started. However the thing that I am most looking forward to, and the thing that will inspire and motivate me the most, is running the event for the maternity bereavement suite appeal, and to make a difference for such a superb charity. [/p][p]It doesn't matter how "big" or how "little" it may be, any donation really will make such a difference and would be greatly appreciated not just by myself but by the amazing people at the charity too.[/p][p]Thank you in advance,[/p][p]Ollie[/p]
