My story

[p]It all started with a time capsule....[/p][p]I've wanted to run the London Marathon for as long as I can remember so when asked at 16yrs old for a list of things I wanted to do by the time I was 40 to put into a time capsule, running the London Marathon was top of my list, Fast forward 22 yrs and I remembered that list and thought I'd better do something about it. So here I am at 39 running the London Marathon in April before I'm 40![/p][p]And what better charity to run for than one that helps our family on a daily basis. The NSPKU.[/p][p]My husband, Brett, was born with phenylketonuria (PKU). He was tested at a few days old as all children are with the Guthrie (heel ****) test and found to have PKU.[/p][p]PKU is a rare inherited condition (approx 1 in 10,000 births in the UK) which prevents your body from processing an element of protein called phenylalanine and is controlled with a low protein diet for life and protein replacement formula. This means a VERY restricted diet with no meat, dairy, eggs, cheese, bread etc.[/p][p]Untreated PKU patients can be severely disabled and dependant on lifelong care as high phenylalanine levels in the brain cause severe impairments to mental and physical development.[/p][p]The NSPKU exists to help and support people with PKU and their families. It organises conferences so people can meet, encourages close contact with medical professionals, sponsors medical research and testing to enable us to have lists of suitable food. [/p][p]We'd like to help them continue to support families like ours. [/p][p]Please give any amount you can. [/p][p]Thank you so much xx[/p]

My partner has mild PKU and it's still challenging, living with classic PKU must be very difficult at times but the community is great and very supportive, good luck.
