Team story

[p]On Saturday 6 April we (Clifford, James and Adam) will be embarking on a 9 day epic journey by bike from Land's End to John O'Groats. The total distance will be just under 1000 miles ( over 100 miles a day) which is the equivalent of running a marathon a day for 9 days! We will be completely unsupported. So every obstacle we face will be dealt with by the three of us. Or at least two of us whilst clifford watches. This is by far our greatest sporting challenge to date although the thought of cycling 1000 miles, and sharing a room with Clifford is much worse than any hill we may come across! So if you are looking for a reason to sponsor us (particularly me and Adam) there it is.[/p][p][br][/p][p]We have mapped out our route and it will take us through some lovely places. We will update our Facebook accounts with our progress.[/p][p][br][/p][p]We are hoping that our efforts benefit others by raising money for two charities which mean a great deal to us. They are:[/p][p][br][/p][p]1. The Demelza Kent is a children's hospice which provides professional, specialist, one-to-one care and support and access to life-enhancing facilities for babies, children and young people up to the age of 19. This is a great hospice which gave amazing care to my nephew Harry Honychurch. The love and support he received when he was there touched my sister and her family. We would love to support them by raising some money so that they can continue to provide high quality care. [/p][p][br][/p][p]2. Breast cancer charity unit based st. Margaret’s hospital Epping.[/p][p]My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2008 and she met her surgeon, Mr Ashraf Patel, who throughout her treatment was re-assuring, supportive and very caring, but it wasn’t until later once her treatment had finished that she became aware of how lucky she was being treated at Princess Alexandra NHS Trust and by Mr Patel who had set up the charity in 2003 to raise funds for clinical trials. My mum was a patient on a clinical trial that proved so successful that it has now become standard treatment at Princess Alexandra Hospital for suitable patients. [/p][p][br][/p][p]I then became aware of all the fund raising carried out by Ashraf as my mum and dad became part of his fund raising team, helping to raise thousands of pounds for the charity and I know the research funded by the charity enables suitable patients to have access to drugs, not available on the NHS, as part of clinical trials free of charge.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Over a period of 14 years an increasing number of women have received life saving and life prolonging treatment for which no other funding is available from the NHS or other sources other than the charity in the Essex and Hertford catchments area.[/p]
