My story

[p]Starting on 23 May 2019 and finishing on 29 June, I cycled the length of Britain, visiting all the places that I had lived for more than a month. I was born in Cornwall and lived for a while in Orkney; places in between included north Wiltshire, north Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Hedon (near Hull), Walney Island (off Barrow-in-Furness), Durham, Isle of May (in the Firth of Forth), Aberdeen and Banchory. In total I covered 3015 km. I visited places and friends (and family) on the way and explored the meaning of memory. I compared past photographs with the current scene. I had fun doing this, and was strongly motivated by more than 150 extraordinarily generous donors to two causes close to my heart. You can still join those donors here! I summarised my progress daily on my blog Down Memory Lane.[/p][p]I have chosen two charities, Alzheimer's Research UK and the Spinal Injuries Association.[/p][p]I believe in the power of science to find solutions and want to support Alzheimer's Research UK's efforts in relation to all forms of dementia. Most of us have been personally touched by dementia in our family or friends. The Spinal Injuries Association is a little more personal as my sister Jo had an accident before Christmas that badly damaged her upper spine/neck. She is presently making good progress in Stoke Mandeville hospital, so I'd like to help the charity that focusses on this area of health. I called in to see Jo on my bike ride.[/p]

Congratulations, Mark! What a great and at the same time meaningful performance :) I think I can at least understand your performance a bit, even if I only did a tenth of your distance (in 16 hours) - your role model motivated me, thank you!
