My story

[p]At Rude Health, we eat to live and live to eat. That’s why 15 of us have decided to cycle a busting 140 miles from our London office to Amsterdam office to raise money and awareness for Chefs in Schools. [/p][p]Why Chefs in Schools?[/p][p]Chefs in Schools bring nourishing food back to school meals. We believe that access to high-quality, genuinely nutritious food should be something for every child. This is rarely the case. 1 in 5 children leave school obese. Children living in deprived areas are three times as likely to be obese as their wealthier peers. [/p][p]Who are Chefs in Schools?[/p][p]Chefs in Schools’ solution is simple. Their mission is to bring in leading restaurant chefs to work in school kitchens and revamp school food. Nicole Pisani, co-founder, quit her job at Ottolenghi’s top restaurant Nopi to join Gayhurst Primary School in Hackney. She is now Head Chef and a Cookery teacher at the school, holding classes in the kitchen, visiting science classes to talk about nutrition and healthy eating and even providing vegetables for the children to draw in art class. [/p][p]They now have chefs from the likes of St John and Noma in 16 Schools across some of the most deprived areas of London and aim to add another 15 schools next year.[/p][p]As well as producing freshly made, seasonal food, they’ve also managed to cut the cost per head. That means better food at a lower cost.[/p][p]What’s the benefit?[/p][p]All of the meals are created to release energy slowly across the school day. In the most successful cases “teachers report better concentration and health”. As much a triumph, though, is the children being more adventurous with food and sitting together, with teachers at the table each day, encouraging communication skills and enjoyment of food. [/p][p]For the kitchen staff the impact is dramatic. They go from pre-sliced, pre-packaged foods and never having chopped carrots before, to restaurant level training. [/p][p]The cycle:[/p][p]We will leave our office in Putney Bridge at 10am on Friday 15th June. We will then cycle 90 miles to Harwich and should get there in time for our 11pm ferry wheels a’ rolling. The next morning we will cycle another 51 miles into Amsterdam fuelled on gouda. [/p][p]Help us raise as much as possible. Every penny raised will go directly to the charity.[/p][p]Chefs in Schools aim is to reach 100 schools by 2023. [/p][p]To get a Chef into a School and to transform their entire food offering in the long-term costs £15,000. That means transforming the meals of 400-450 pupils. [/p][p]We hope you’ll feel similarly inspired and want to help us raise as much as possible. [/p][p]THANK YOU.
