My story

[p]Between 11 September to 11 October I am cycling 500 miles to raise money for Clowns Without Borders UK. This is part of a larger fundraising effort begun in October last year. If 500 people sponsor me £10 each, their names will be put into a hat for the chance to win a painting. (make sure you leave your full name and email me to enter the draw - info below).[/p][p]Your name will be put into the hat for every £10 sponsored so if you want a greater chance of winning you can sponsor more! (ie £30 = 3 x into the hat). The catch: I will only donate if 500 people sponsor so please tell your friends and family to help spread the word. The winning name will be drawn by Sam Holdsworth (Director of the Clowns) - AND - the winner will get to choose their favourite of 3 paintings. [/p][p]Would you like to be one of these people? Please make sure that your name is not anonymous to me when you donate and just in case email me your contact info to alex@alex-mcintyre.co.uk with the email subject: cycling for Clowns. [/p][p]*Please be aware that international entrants outside the UK will be responsible for shipping costs. [/p][p][br][/p][p]_____________________[/p][p]This cycling and painting activity is part of a larger fundraising drive. [/p][p]Sadly the Clowns are not able to work in the field due to COVID-19. Whilst many of the larger charities have simply pulled out abandoning people living in refugee camps, the Clowns are innovative, resourceful and resilient. They have continued to work with refugees using platforms such as whatsapp, sending educational and play based resources to them so that the individuals can lead and deliver activities themselves for the community. Over half the worlds refugees are children making this work absolutely vital. [/p][p]Things I have done so far[/p][p][gt]15 March - Half Marathon in Bath (self funded place)[/p][p][gt] Sell out first print run of Cards (11.2.2020) - total raised through sales of print products (cards and limited edition prints) = £181.04 so far (woohoo!)[/p][p][gt] Open Studio 7th December 2019. 10% of all sales of work donated to Clowns Without Borders UK.[/p][p][gt] Launched limited edition print in two sizes (A2 and A3) with 10% of profits donated to the Clowns.[/p][p][gt]Launched sales of packs of Art + Charity Cards for £12.50 per pack with 10% of profits going to Clowns without Borders UK – raising £114 so far[/p][p][gt] Ran Royal Parks Half Marathon raising £1650. I ran with a team with a team of 20 other people and together we raised £13500 for the Clowns.[/p][p]________________[/p][p]Why Clowns Without Borders UK? I personally know the Director of the charity with whom I have worked on community and participatory arts projects since 2009, as well as a number of the clowns. I can vouch for the quality and integrity of the work they do as well as its positive impact. In addition, the administrative team is small, donating much of their time for free. Their artists – professional performers and musicians – also volunteer their time and expertise for free. They are clowns not in the scary dubious sense but in the joy-filled laughter-giving playful sense offering hope and solidarity, helping to re-build communities.[/p][p]Why do this?[/p][p]Right now, there are a billion children who live in areas affected by conflict, war or disaster. When this happens children are often the first group in any population to lose their rights; the right to be a child. Clowns Without Borders aims to bring this back encouraging children to laugh, play and forget their struggles…to simply be children again. The clowns do this by creating unique opportunities for children to engage with performances created by expert clowns, jugglers, acrobats and musicians.[/p][p]Community and a love of people are at the heart of my practice. This fundraising drive is a way to nourish, build and develop my own personal and professional communities whilst simultaneously benefitting more vulnerable people in need of our help.[/p][p]I feel strongly that at this point in our history, creating more love and connection in the world is vital.[/p][p][br][/p]
