My story

[p]So how on earth did I find myself taking part in Variety’s Strictly Ballroom competition on 9th October? There’s a question! Simple really, a very talented and committed bunch of individuals at Variety Yorkshire caught me, put me in a sack and drove me away in a van. The only way to buy my freedom was to promise to be a contestant![/p][p]Now, what REALLY happened was my company, Stephen George + Partners Architects, has had the pleasure of sponsoring the annual Yorkshire Property Awards at Rudding Park for a few years. On those occasions we have been moved by the work Variety has done; providing much needed help to the children and young persons in desperate need in our region. We were impressed by the dedication and persistence of the guys at Variety.[/p][p]So, when in 2018 I was asked if I would do Strictly, I was simultaneously flattered and terrified and, able to use the genuine excuse that I was nursing a back injury, politely declined.[/p][p]But the Variety angels are persistent (very persistent) and, when I met them again at YPA this year – suitably lubricated and largely-anaesthetised – Charlotte and Annabel asked me once more. “I’m really not sure” I said. “You’d be perfect” they said. White lies of course, but they had the big fella on the hook! “You’ll be partnered with a professional dancer and given lessons!” Oh, goody… dancing lessons. You might be able to train a dog to fly an aeroplane, but that does not necessarily make it a good idea. [/p][p]"All the dance instruction is properly organised by Victoria Coultas Dance” they said, and then they unleashed their secret weapon; “Meet Victoria.” Job done! 😊[/p][p]So, if you fancy the opportunity of seeing 6’4” and 280lbs of uncoordinated chaos doing his thing in a good cause, get yourself on to the Variety website: BUY TICKETS come along to Bowcliffe Hall on the 9th October and have a great evening. If you can’t come, but the very THOUGHT of yours truly making a bit of a fool of himself gives you pleasure – put a price on that pleasure and donate what you can – it will be greatly appreciated. Go on, get on that website and spare a thought for poor Victoria![/p][p]Mrs Ward thinks it’s highly amusing – must be worth £50! [/p]
