Team story

[p]On October 4, 2020, I'll be running my very first London Marathon, virtually joining thousands of other runners of all ages and abilities, up and down the country as we all run our own unique 26.2 mile route. [/p][p]Admittedly, this isn't how I imagined my first London Marathon when I started training back in January, but running (always keeping socially acceptable distances) through a global pandemic has helped me keep sane, happy, and healthy and led to some amazing views of London - the empty streets at once both serene and surreal.[/p][p]Training for the London Marathon, fundraising for my local charity, South London Special League, gave me a purpose - I could give something back to my community.[/p][p]For me, these past few months have underlined in all the colours of the rainbow how essential sport is to society. Providing a chance to participate in sport leads to improved health and mental well-being, as well as physical fitness. [/p][p]And that's what South London Special League does. The charity provides a competitive football league for disabled people, breaking down social and environmental barriers to inclusion, providing opportunities for heightened self esteem and overall happiness. The organisation now provides access to a wide range of sports for our diverse disabled community. [/p][p]Background[/p][p]In March, 2020, I completed my first challenge for South London Special League running the Big Half on Sunday March 1 with teamates Olwen, Rachel, Miren, Cleo and Mairead. [/p][p]We know the fun and friendship that develops through sport is something special - keeping fit together helps us get through life physically and mentally. We became friends through early morning outdoor fitness: bleary eyed, getting to know each other over dumbells, kettlebells and sunshine runs with Burn It Fitness 6am classes, winter and summer, rain and shine (which had to become online classes for a while from March 2020), providing a much-needed fitness focus during Lockdown life. [/p][p]Thank you very much for your donation to South London Special League. You have helped provide access to sport for disabled players, creating lifelong friendships through participation in competitive sport.[/p][p]Helen[/p][p][br][/p]
