My story

[p]This year I will be running the 2020 London Marathon for the Anthony Nolan Foundation! [/p][p]Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people affected by blood cancers and blood disorders who are in need of lifesaving bone marrow/stem cell transplants. [/p][p]Each day they save 3 lives by making connections with incredible strangers from their registry of donors who are willing to donate their stem cells. [/p][p]A school friend , Sandy , was diagnosed in 2016 aged 21 with Severe Aplastic Anaemia , a very rare disease of bone marrow failure which affects only 1-2 people annually in the UK . [/p][p]Sandy has endured over 3 years of lengthy and gruelling treatment - and although presently stable he is not in remission. He will undoubtedly need further treatment and the only cure would be a bone marrow transplant which would ultimately require the services of Anthony Nolan to find him a suitable match. [/p][p]Knowing Sandy and seeing how he copes with the life-changing diagnosis of Aplastic Anaemia has inspired me to raise funds through my London Marathon run to support Anthony Nolan & in addition raise awareness of the Anthony Nolan stem cell register to which anyone aged 16-30 can sign up via a simple swab test . [/p][p]This incredible charity not only links patients and donors through their world renowned stem cell register - they also raise much needed funds for lifesaving research into the blood cancers and disorders that affect so many, and they provide vital post-transplant support to patients and their families. [/p][p]So please - if you can donate to this worthwhile cause I would really appreciate it! [/p][p]And why not consider another type of donation - blood ?! Many of the patients helped by Anthony Nolan require multiple blood transfusions and yet in the UK only 4% of the eligible population donate blood on a regular basis. One donated unit of blood can help save the lives of 3 people. It’s quick and easy and don’t forget the reward of a cup of tea and a biscuit afterwards ... #GiveBlood #SaveAL[/p]
