My story

[p]Due to the the Marathon des Sables being postponed in April 2020 and also again in September 2020, due to Covid 19, I ran six marathons in six days here in the UK, to replicate the event, starting with the Exmoor Trail Marathon on Saturday 17th October followed by a further marathon each day for the next five days.[/p][p]I am doing so to raise funds for those with spinal injury and particularly a former colleague and a friend of mine from Downside School. Rob Butt was Head of the History Department at Downside until a tragic accident in Malta left him paralysed from the neck down and completely dependent on others for the most basic things we take for granted. Rob is currently confined to home, but with your generous support I plan to raise funds to provide Rob with an exoskeleton for his right arm and also a standing machine. Rob will be able to raise a glass or cup to his mouth without relying on someone to hold it for him and also benefit from a degree of independence in the house.[/p][p]I know that sponsorship requests are commonplace, but this is a very worthwhile cause and any money that you do donate will be put to excellent use through Southern Spinal Injuries Trust (SSIT). SSIT raises money to help people living with spinal cord injury in the South and South West of England. At least 50% of the money raised will be made available to purchase equipment for Rob, with the balance helping others in a similar predicament. You can donate here, or if you prefer, donations can be made by cheque or bank transfer direct to SSIT at Natwest, sort 54-41-19, account 47647299.[/p][p]Thank you very much for all your donations - I have been very touched by all your support, and Rob Butt is very grateful.[/p][p]Simon[/p]

Simon - Smellie's old roommate from John's, just caught up with Rupert again after 30-odd years. He told me what you had done. I did not believe it at first, but a picture is worth a thousand words....! What an excellent cause and keep up the great work.

Hi Simon - well done! You probably don’t remember me, but I worked in BZW Malaysia with Steve 1996-1998, covering Insurance stocks and a few other sectors. I’ve moved back to Sydney now but keep in contact with Steve, who forwarded your fund raiser to me.
