My story

[p]During this pandemic it came to our attention that there are particular groups of individuals that these circumstances can leave extremely vulnerable. [/p][p]Day to day we always try to support these charities and have supported Cathedral Archers through our yearly harvest appeal! [/p][p]However we wanted to raise awareness about the amazing work that these charities do to our friends, family and public! We are so proud that these charities work locally within in our community and want to ensure they have all the help and recognition they need to continue their services during this time! [/p][p]We wanted to tell you just how incredible they are and a bit about what they do! [/p][p]It's hard to protect yourself from Covid 19 when you are homeless - night shelters are overcrowded, there are less facilities to wash hands and many are more prone to respiratory illnesses. Whilst the government have been working to ensure that the homeless have a place to sleep through the hotel scheme, this will end and charities like Cathedral Archer Project will be even more in demand. The loss of jobs and financial difficulties that affect many of our neighbours in Sheffield will see a rise in demand for their services. These are just some of the services they provide:[/p][p]Assessment and signposting to appropriate service providers[/p][p]1:1 support[/p][p]In-house nurse and dental clinics[/p][p] Access to hot food, drinks and food parcels[/p][p]Showers and laundry[/p][p]A programme of activities to help people learn skills and enjoy new experiences[/p][p]The chance to gain accredited awards[/p][p]A structured volunteer programme which helps people to gain structure in their lives.[/p][p]Support to attend drug and alcoholic treatment services[/p][p]Access to computers and telephones[/p][p]The second charity we would really like to bring attention to is Sheffield Women's Aid - domestic abuse calls are up by 25% and the domestic abuse killings have more than doubled amid Covid 19. We want to stand up against domestic abuse and encourage our friends and family to speak up and seek help if they should ever be in a position where they face any abuse. Sheffield Women's Aid aim to bring about long term change for those who seek help. Too oftenthose at “standard” or “medium” risk are left to fend for themselves, or offered an hour of counselling a week with little support to escape their abuser. Not surprisingly, many women struggle to escape the abuse permanently, build their independence, and get their lives back. They train our community, professionals and specialist services to give the right response to survivors, the first time they speak out about abuse. They work with women and their children to provide a support worker and a safe place to stay.[/p][p][br][/p][p]In order to help raise awareness about the amazing work these charities do and hopefully raise some funds along the way the Sheffield University Hockey Club will be running/walking the distance to Porec, Croatia where we were meant to visit for our annual hockey tour this April. Thats a total of 1231.4 miles. [/p][p]To make this even more fun we are having a race between the women's and men's club - first to Porec wins. [/p][p]We hope you support our message and that if you can spare some money during these hard times that we have shown you why your money can be so valuable to these incredible organisations! [/p][p]Remember both these organisations also rely on donations in kind so if you are in Sheffield then any tins or long life products would be appreciated by Cathedral Archer Project and likewise old clothes and unused toiletries will be welcomed by Sheffield Women's Aid - start sorting through your wardrobe! [/p][p]Thank you so much [/p][p]The SUHC [/p][p]X [/p]
