My story

[p]Update 11.04.21: I completed the second half marathon on a treadmill in 93 mins 24 secs. That's probably the fastest I'll ever run, it hurt like crazy but I wanted to do Dad proud. Thank you all so much for your sponsorship, it keeps me going in every sense xxx[/p][p]Update 20.11.20: My beloved Dad passed away on 17 November 2020. I am utterly heartbroken. He saw me complete the first run (see below). I will continue training to complete the remaining runs in his honour.[/p][p]Update 05.02.21: I am very honoured to have been selected by the Royal Parks Half Marathon as one of five runners that they are promoting as part of their "Inspire" campaign: https://royalparkshalf.com/Inspire/. They have decided to hold the April 2021 event as a local race due to the ongoing pandemic, so I will once more run a half marathon in the local area. They have also offered me a VIP place to run in the October 2021 race, so I will now be completing three half marathons for your sponsorship! It seems fitting as I am now carrying three precious people in my heart with me.[/p][p]--[/p][p]Cancer has waged war on my family, and this is my little attempt at fighting back.[/p][p]In 2018, cancer dealt us three cruel blows in as many months. In August, it claimed the life of my beloved Mum. In September, my darling Dad was diagnosed with incurable prostate cancer. In October, my amazing brother David was diagnosed with advanced renal cancer, which took him from us just 11 devastating weeks later.[/p][p]In 2019, I ran a 10km race and organised a coffee morning to raise money for the hospices that cared for my brother and my Mum. Together I raised £6000, and I am so grateful for the generosity of so many. This time, I want to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK to help give my Dad a fighting chance while he is still alive. It is thanks to pioneering advances in treatment that he is still with us, but there is still no cure, and cancer research has been affected by the global pandemic. We cannot afford to wait. My Dad is my inspiration and my dearest friend and I am going to run the extra (13.1) mile(s) for him.[/p][p]I obtained a place to run the 2020 Royal Parks Half Marathon. My training took a big hit in January - having got up to 10 miles, I then had a serious accident and was not able to train at all for several months, by which time I had to go almost back to the beginning. But I'm back and I'm ready. In light of the pandemic, the race has now been postponed for 6 months, to April 2021. But cancer won't wait so neither will I. I've decided to run the half marathon twice - once on the original race date, in my local area, and then again when the rescheduled event takes place. I don't like to do things by halves, so you get 26.2 miles for your sponsorship, and I'll give it 100% each time.[/p][p]I know that these are hard times for many. Anything at all that you can spare will be very gratefully received. Thank you.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Update October 2020: First race completed! I ran my first half marathon on 11 October 2020, the original date of the Royal Parks Half Marathon. I ran laps between my home and where my Dad lives, cheered on by my lovely family, ending the race on his front drive. Buoyed by the generosity of my sponsors and my love for my family, I ran faster than I have ever run before and completed the race in 1:44:59. All the hard work and training through injury, a pandemic, heatwaves, thunderstorms and all the rest finally came to fruition, and it was such an honour to see Dad's face as I crossed the finishing line.[/p]

So sorry to hear of your loss. I remember your lovely mum introducing me to vegan ice-cream and Capital Gold. Really impressed by the challenge you've set yourself in your family's memory. Good luck Catherine Phillips (Adams) xx
