Team story

[p]There is still time to donate to the Star Club’s Centurion Challenge.[/p][p]If you have just arrived on this page, thank you for looking it up. Star Club’s Centurion, Darcey Murphy, 13, has successfully rowed 100km in 24 hours to support community sport in Bedford. If you row, you will know this would be a tough challenge and for one so young, even more impressive. [/p][p]Darcey’s task was to complete the 100km distance with the support of multiple quad crews throughout the period. Darcey’s preference was to do as much in a boat as she could and then she swapped seat for saddle and did an 11km bike ride about a third of the way in. Star Club organised multiple crews to jump in and out of her quad to give her fresh conversation and the experience of rowing with as many club members as possible. The crews were made up of male, female and mixed masters, recs, seniors, a junior crew and a visiting crew from Bedford Rowing Club too.[/p][p]Darcey was cheered on by Club, friends and family and did very well indeed. With a positive pragmatic approach to the task, Darcey was calm and focused and she did Star Club proud. Please sponsor this young lady and her efforts to raise money to take Star Club's current ‘dry start’ programme, in partnership with two schools in Bedford, from two schools to six. The programme is aimed at introducing young people to indoor rowing, and to provide opportunities at the club to take up the sport. By working with LYR (London Youth Rowing) and raising funds from the Centurion Challenge, Star Club will employ a Community Coach to run the dry start programme. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Darcey began her rowing career at Star Club in her home town of Bedford back in September 2019, just before her 12th Birthday. At the time of her centurion challenge appointment, she was the youngest member of Star Club’s junior squad! [/p][p]Darcey’s sporting prowess was inherited from her father, who is a keen sportsperson, having played cricket at school before discovering rowing in his twenties, at Bedford Rowing Club. [/p][p]With two older siblings, Darcey has been the only one to follow in his footsteps and take to the water with such enthusiasm. She immediately showed a natural aptitude for rowing, impressing her coaches and squad mates from the beginning.[/p][p]Thank you for any donation you make, be it large or small, it will make a difference.[/p]
