Team story

[p]We will be undertaking a sponsored hike up to the top of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles standing at 1,343m (4,406ft) on the 6th October this year. We are doing this to help raise funds for the vital maintenance of Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust’s research vessel Silurian.[/p][p]Hebridean waters represent some of the most important habitats for whales, dolphins and porpoises (collectively known as cetaceans) in Europe with 23 species, nearly a third of the world total being recorded in the area.[/p][p]Silurian has been a part of the Trust since 2002, for over a decade now she has proven to be an invaluable asset to their work, to monitor, protect and conserve whales, dolphins and porpoises off the West coast of Scotland. Silurian has covered over 100,000km surveying Hebridean waters, collecting valuable visual and acoustic data. Over the last 16 years the Trust has established a large data set, which has been used as a major factor in the proposal designation of Marine Protected Areas and Special Areas of Conservation in the Hebrides for a range of different species.[/p][p]Taking part in the hike will be Chris Sharples, Callum Branstone, Will Neal, and Kieran Wragg, we will also be joined by Graham Hill an experienced mountain leader, he has generously offered to be our guide for the hike.[/p][p]For our route, we will be hiking up the well-used ‘Mountain Path’ beginning our ascent just outside the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre and ending at the summit of Ben Nevis. The track is just over 4 miles each way and should take us between 7 to 8 hours to complete our return journey.[/p][p]All four of us are inexperienced hikers, so we each have decided to prepare for this hike, and we have set a Facebook page ‘HWDT Sponsored Ben Nevis Hike’, which you can ‘like’ to follow our training and preparations, and we will also be posting regular updates to this page during the actual hike (signal dependant).[/p][p]Facebook page URL: https://www.facebook.com/HWDT-Sponsored-Ben-Nevis-Hike-226465708198612/[/p][p]Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust is an organisation dedicated to the continued research, education and conservation of these magnificent animals and is run by a passionate and dedicated team of people all committed to ensuring the protection and preservation of cetaceans throughout the Hebrides. [/p][p]If you'd like to learn more about the HWDT, then check out their website www.hwdt.org[/p][p]Silurian is due a substantial refit over this winter, and the money we are able to raise will go towards helping to fund this![/p][p]From all four of us we thank you for your donations![/p][p][br][/p][p]Update! [/p][p]We did it! The team reached the summit of Ben Nevis in just over 4 hours![/p][p]Our Ben Nevis Challenge is now complete and we’d like to say a MASSIVE thank you to everyone, friends, family and all the whale, dolphin and porpoises lovers out there! Who have supported and donated to our challenge![/p][p]Our donation page is still live! and will remain so for one more week! Closing the day after the 14th October.[/p]
