My story

[p]I am asking for your help.[/p][p]Each year the National Chair of LACA nominates a charity to fundraise for during their year in office. As I take over the reins of our association I have given much thought to which organisations could benefit from my fundraising activities.[/p][p]It is not an easy decision to make as there are so many charitable organisations out there - all desperately seeking money to increase awareness, fund research or support sufferers and survivors of serious illness or injury - I have however decided this year to support equally two very worthy charities.[/p][p]My father sadly suffered a number of strokes during his life and I can recall first hand how debilitating and frustrating the aftermath is for many survivors and their families - please remember a stroke can strike anyone at any age. So the first charity I want to support this year is The Stroke Association. This organisation works to prevent stroke, and to support everyone touched by stroke, fund research, and campaign for the rights of stroke survivors of all ages.[/p][p]Each week in the UK and Ireland, more than 30 children are diagnosed with cancer and whilst such cancers in children are not as common as those in adults it is just as devastating and can, if survived, lead to further health complications later in life. One out of five children will not survive their disease. The funding made available to support childhood (and teenage) cancers is very much smaller than that provided to adult cancer research but I, and I am sure you will too, believe it is equally as important - I have been touched by the effects of childhood cancer and the impact it has on families too. Hence the second charity I would like to support this year is the Childhood Cancer and Leukaemia Group. Over the past 40 years, CCLG is has played a key role in the major improvements in survival rates and the standards of care for children. It is an ever growing charity providing vital support to sufferers, survivors and grieving families during, and following, the cancer treatment of children and teenagers as well as supporting crucial research into these horrific age related illnesses.[/p][p]With my year as Chair coinciding with the 30th anniversary of our Association, and with one of my aims being to support and bring focus to the fantastic work carried out in the regions across the UK, I would like to call on all members and our fantastic suppliers to support me in several regional 30km walks over the next few months – I personally will be completing them all. These events I hope, with other donations too, will help me reach my £20,000 target providing in turn £10,000 to each worthy charity.[/p][p]I will keep everyone up to date with progress and work with Regional Chairs to organise the events across the country. A dedicated website will also be linked to this page soon along with the usual social media coverage to ensure as much publicity as possible is achieved.[/p][p]If you are able to support in anyway my fundraising activities for these two brilliant charities I would be very grateful be it through your own activities, direct donation through this page or event sponsorship opportunities.[/p][p]Thank you so much[/p][p]Michael[/p]
