My story

[p]On July 30th 2021 I will be attempting to swim, run and bike the length of the Outer Hebrides in one attempt from the Barra Head Lighthouse to the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse.[/p][p]This is a distance of 20 miles of swimming, 52 miles of running and 112 miles of cycling across the last archipelago before the Atlantic Ocean, and I will attempt this challenge continuously, taking breaks for food and water. The route is named the Selkie, after the mythological seal-folk that could shed their seal skin to come on to land in human form, much like what I'm planning.[/p][p]Our Atlantic waters are blessed with a number of native megafauna species including Minke Whales, Basking Sharks, Killer Whales, Harbour Porpoises, Bottlenose Dolphins and much more. Unfortunately, these animals are facing numerous human driven pressures globally but also locally from warming seas, plastic pollution and net entanglement.[/p][p][br][/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/bAt80-ub6Lc?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3"][/vmgvideo][p][br][/p][p]I would therefore like for this race to be an opportunity to give back to the conservation of these amazing species and our oceans, which I would like to do through the locally based Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust. The trust are based on the isle of Mull in the inner Hebrides, and for the past 20 years have been working directly with local communities for the conservation of whales, dolphins and porpoises in the west coast waters. The trust have a unique community based research and education model which connects with citizen scientists and trains marine users to identify and record species to collect the information needed to understand the marine environment. With this information, the trust can inform policy decisions at the national level for the establishment of marine protected zones to safeguard these amazing animals. For more info on the work of this charity take a look at https://hwdt.org/ .[/p][p]The Scottish isles are a beautiful place. The nature, wildlife and scenery are what make them incredibly special, and I want this race to be an opportunity to share the beauty of these islands and encourage all of us to connect with nature once again.[/p][p]Anything you can support with will be enormously appreciated, and is going to be what drives me along not only during the race but also the sufferfest of training that I am anticipating over the next 12 months in icy cold water and early morning starts.[/p][p]So a massive thank you to anyone who is able to support in any way, and I hope you enjoy the journey I will be sharing on social media![/p][p]https://www.instagram.com/jamesarmour_/?hl=af[/p]

Wow! I'm still struggling to comprehend what you've achieved. I can't even imagine how hard you must have trained to make it happen. Inspirational! Thanks for supporting the HWDT - a fantastic charity that is close to my heart.
