My story

[p]Welcome to the Roy Castle and Abbey Theatre '24-Hour Rowathon' sponsorship page[/p][p]In February 2012, Matt Hughes Short's Dad passed away from Lung Cancer.[/p][p]Bob Short was a former county level rugby player, as well as being a rugby coach and all-round sportsman. He played rugby into his 50s with two marathons and several half marathons under his belt. However, he was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer in August 2010, passing away on Matt's 22nd birthday in February 2012, aged 62. He was not a smoker, but he still became one of the 46,000 people who are diagnosed with lung cancer every year. [/p][p]Lung Cancer is the 3rd most common cancer in the UK with only 1/3 of people diagnosed surviving for a year or more. However, it only receives 6% of funding, despite killing more people than breast, colo-rectal and prostate cancer combined. Lung Cancer doesn't discriminate - young or old, man or woman, smoker or non-smoker - we need to do more to raise awareness, support patients and save lives.[/p][p]Additionally, in 2019 more people are being diagnosed with common mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. It’s estimated that 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year, while 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem every week. Mental health remains the most common cause of disability in the UK and this is particularly true in young people. 50% of mental health problems are established by age 14 and 75% by age 24, with 10% of children and young people (aged 5 – 16 years) have a clinically diagnosable mental health problem.[/p][p]However, research shows us that the arts can be an effective method for improving wellbeing, particularly in young people. Theatre provides children with a safe space to express their emotion, fostering creativity, improving wellbeing and creating a space for social connection.[/p][p]You are invited to join us on the 22nd February 2020 to celebrate Matt’s 30th Birthday and support him as he completes a 24-hour solo row on a rowing machine to fundraise for two charitable causes close to his heart: the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and the Abbey Theatre Trust in St Albans. [/p][p]Roy Castle are the only charity dedicated to lung cancer research, care and support, while the Abbey Theatre provide numerous opportunities in St Albans for both children and adults to get involved with theatre, providing opportunities for them to improve their wellbeing through the arts. [/p][p]The event is sponsored by leisure provider ‘Everyone Active’ and will begin at 12:00 midday and will continue until Matt completes his row at 12:00 midday on the 23rd. Features of the event will include:[/p][p]· Live entertainment, including music, theatre, dance and more (Saturday from 13:00).[/p][p]· ‘Bring and Share’ afternoon tea with guests invited to bring cake, biscuits or other tea items (Saturday from 12:15). [/p][p]· Breakfast bacon butties, tea and coffee (Sunday from 09:00).[/p][p]· Rowing challenges, including ‘250m sprint’ and ‘Guess the Total Distance Rowed’ with £100 worth of Amazon vouchers up for grabs (Saturday from 12:00).[/p][p]· A huge raffle with prizes generously donated from elite sports clubs, corporate organisations and local Hertfordshire-based businesses (Saturday and Sunday).[/p][p]· … and the bar will be open! (Saturday 12:00 midday – 12:00 midnight).[/p][p]There will also be an additional rowing machine set up alongside Matt for those who would like to complete a short segment to keep him company as he completes his mammoth row, with further opportunities to find out more about the Abbey Theatre and the work of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.[/p][p]Matt would be grateful for any sponsorship and support you would be willing to provide so that he can raise as much as possible for both charities. By sponsoring Matt, you’ll help to fund research, lung cancer nurses and the formation of lung cancer support groups across the country. Additionally, you’ll be helping to fund new facilities for the Abbey Theatre so they can keep facilitating opportunities for adults and children.
