My story

[p]There are 93 inhabited islands in Scotland. Over the course of three years, starting in January 2018, I will set out to climb to the highest point of each of these islands. [/p][p]I will be documenting my progress as I travel the country and tick off the islands. Please take a look at my website for more information and to keep up to date with the challenge.[/p][p]I am supporting three charities during this challenge across Scotland. All do fantastic work and all worthy of support. More information can be found for each charity below. All money raised will be split equally between the three causes.[/p][p] Charities[/p][p][/p][p]Dumfries and Galloway Befriending Project: This charity has been running for 20 years across the region. The main aim of this charity is to partner trained volunteering adults with vulnerable young people, aged 8 to 18. They look to provide a positive influence and support during what might be a difficult time in the young person’s life.[/p][p]I have been involved for 17 years, and in that time I have worked with 10 children of varying ages. It is fantastic to help children that may be struggling for a variety of causes and seeing the change as we get to know each other over time. Such a small amount of my time can have a great impact on these children and each child brings a different challenge.[/p][p][/p][p]Mary’s Meals is charity that works in 15 countries across the globe. It aims to provide children in developing countries a nutritious meal at the point of education. This sets up the children for the day allowing them to concentrate on their education with a nourishing meal in their stomach.[/p][p]To date over 1.2 million children are receiving a meal a day. The charity also works with the local community to provide the meals. Where possible they use locally sourced ingredients which are cooked and prepared by members of the local community.[/p][p] [/p][p][/p][p]The Dalbeattie Rotary Club is part of the worldwide organisation. The organisations brings together people in the local community to help tackle local and worldwide problems. The Dalbeattie Club supports a range of local causes. This includes being heavily involved in the local schools providing financial assistance for local ambulance to the playgroup.[/p][p]As part of the wider organisation we also fundraise and raise awareness of the organisation global aims. This has included raising money to aid in the End Polio campaign to supporting a mobile eye clinic in South Africa.[/p][p][br][/p][p]It would be great to raise as much money as possible over the course of this challenge as all three charities do brilliant work. I will be posting blog updates as I visit the islands so please take a look at the website to track my progress.[/p][p][br][/p]
