I am running the 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon to raise money for Mencap. Not only because they are the official charity partner this year, but because they have supported me throughout my life. This started with me attending play schemes when I was young and most recently they have helped me find paid employment. This has made me want to give back to Mencap - the greatest charity ever![/p][p]My ambition was to work in a hotel, and Mencap helped me to see that I could achieve my ambitions. Through a Mencap supported internship I did 300 learning hours and 300 work experience hours. They tailored the learning to me and I loved it! I impressed the staff at the Novotel so much that before I finished my supported internship, they offered me a job at the hotel, and I have worked there since July 2019. I was really proud, really, really proud of what I have achieved. I even got employee of the month once. I was like ‘Yes – I’ve got a job!’ It's about being able to stand on my own two feet, being able to save for things. But it’s not just about money for me, it’s about being independent, being valued and included, and also about being able to give back to my family, being able to contribute. [/p][p]So now I am raising money to give back to Mencap, all donations are really appreciated and all the money raised will go to Mencap's All Move programme that will bring young people with and without a learning disability together through sport. I wish there had been something like this programme when I was at school – it would have made a big difference to me, and I think that it will do a lot to change the lives of future generations of people with a learning disability. [/p][p]Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.[/p]
