My story

[p]I am incredibly proud to be running the London Marathon on 26th April 2020 for Kidney Research UK, in memory of my beautiful dad.[/p][p]Kidney Research UK relies mostly on fundraising to raise awareness and carry out research into kidney disease, treatments and patient care. You can find more info on their website – www.kidneyresearchuk.org. [/p][p]To keep it short, kidney disease is when your kidneys stop doing their job, i.e. they stop filtering out unwanted waste and fluid in your body. End-stage kidney disease (kidney failure) is where your kidneys have lost all function. The only treatment is dialysis or a transplant, neither of which are cures. There are two types of dialysis: haemodialysis, which is delivered through approx. three 4-hour treatments per week, or peritoneal dialysis, which is delivered overnight or at multiple times during the day.[/p][p]Dad was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease when he was 50 and was lucky to receive a kidney transplant, which he had for 20 years, before he went into kidney failure for a second time. He wasn't well enough to have another transplant so went onto peritoneal dialysis again. For dad, this meant he was attached to a machine for 10 hours per night every night at home, something he did without complaint. [/p][p]I've never done a race before (what am I thinking?!), never run more than 2.5k on a treadmill before I did my first run outdoors in May 2019. I’m slowly increasing my distance and pace, looking like a shiny beetroot and running happy. The fact that I'm running for this incredible cause is all the motivation I need. I'm starting my training plan Monday 23rd December, tracking my running journey on social media and have a few fundraising events lined up. [/p][p]So, this one's for you dad and all you kickass people living with kidney disease or supporting a loved one through it. Anything you can donate, whether it's £1 or £10, gets me closer to my target. Thank you so much to everyone who donates and supports, it means the world. [/p][p]Much love,[/p][p]Abbie xx[/p]
