My story

[p]Thank you for visiting our fundraising web page for the 2018 London Legal Walk.[/p][p]Advocate and Fountain Court Chambers teams have joined together to raise as much as we can for the Unit.[/p][p]The team so far comprises of: Ashley Hall, Ian Bergson, Max Evans, Samuel Rabinowitz, Chloe Gibbs, Aaron Taylor, Jacob Turner, Max Wright, Tabitha Rew and Alexandra Whelan[/p][p]Advocate are recruiting all their staff team, as well as trustees to join the walk, including Advocate’s Chairman Mr Justice Knowles CBE![/p][p][br][/p][p]The number of calls for help received by Advocate is growing rapidly. A growing number of people are facing court and tribunal proceedings with no access to advice or representation because they can't afford to pay and funding for advice centres has reduced considerably. So people in terrible circumstances turn to Advocate where lawyers from chambers such as Fountain Court provide free assistance in the most desperate cases. [/p][p]Advocate's work helps people like Joe*, a survivor of torture in Ethiopia, who was assaulted when protecting his friend from a mugging. He suffered from serious physical and psychiatric injuries, which left him unable to work and struggling with day to day life. He was offered a total of £2,600 in Criminal Injuries Compensation. [/p][p]Joe’s case was matched with two barristers to assist him in his fight for fair compensation. They helped him with his case for four long years, on a pro bono basis. Their committed support meant he was finally awarded over £300,000 from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority – enough to make an incredible difference to his life:[/p][p]"I appreciate everything you do for me. Beyond legal advice, the care as a human being. And working tirelessly to ensure that I was given a fair decision. [/p][p] It was a long and upsetting process and I couldn’t have ever thought anyone would stay by my side for this long but you did stand by my side without giving up on me. "[/p][p]?[/p][p]Advocate urgently needs more funds to organise as much help as possible for people like Joe. So we are walking to help raise some of these vital funds.[/p][p]Please support our walkers as generously as you are able[/p][p]Thank you[/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
