My story

[p]I am Alexandra Akinyi Obonyo. A Kenyan girl born during sunrise thus named ‘Akinyi’. I am a product of Starehe Girls Centre, Kenya, which i attended from 2009- 2012 and a main part of who Starehe UK is campaigning for.[/p][p]Starehe UK is a UK registered charity, which raises funds to support Starehe Boys’ and Girls’ school and administer the student sponsorship scheme for supporters. To find out more visit https://starehe.org/about-starehe-uk/ [/p][p]Starehe comprises of two exceptional schools in Kenya, providing a home and a first-class education for bright boys and girls from impoverished backgrounds. Many of the students are orphans, and the Centres never close. Here young people find caring homes, clothing, regular meals, healthcare and a world-class education. They are unique in instilling a firm sense of duty, and in inspiring former pupils to lead exemplary lives across all walks of Kenyan society; today, there are over 12,000 Starehe old boys taking leading roles in politics, business, the law, academia, medicine and the media. [/p][p]Personally, I currently work in the Royal Navy, UK. I first came into UK on an opportunity volunteering with a Scout organization and this giving back spirit was deeply instilled in me by being in Starehe. Furthermore, I got to know about the volunteering opportunity through interaction with a fellow Starehe Girl. The experience in this built up my sense of adventure and sense of making change which led to my joining in the Armed Forces. [/p][p]The sense of community and support in Starehe has impacted a lot on my take on life. Looking back, I see how, were it not for Starehe, my single mum would now be somewhere drowning in debt to put me through school. But then miraculously, I got to be supported by strangers then, who are now family, Out of nowhere!! Blows my Mind everyday!!! [/p][p]And now my spirit lives on, as I want to give back to the society that made this girl today, and change another girl’s or boy’s life just as Starehe did to me. [/p][p]Participation in the London Marathon is just a start for me on this journey and I hope more of you will join hands with me in impacting these beautiful Kenyan lives just as I was. [/p]
