My story

[p]Hello, my name is Alison Allmand-Smith and in March this year 2020, I'm going with a group of former Elite British and Swedish soldiers to the Arctic Circle, to raise money for military families charity Reading Force. As well as revelling in the exquisite beauty & remoteness of one of the last true wildernesses of the world, I will be learning how to survive in extremely cold conditions. And with temperatures ranging anywhere from -10 to -35 , its definitely going to be challenging! [/p][p]So why have I chosen to raise money for Reading Force? Well, their work with books is a subject very close to my heart. Let me explain.[/p][p]Growing up in East London for part of my childhood, there wasn't a lot of opportunity to get access to the countryside. Holidays meant Dad hiring a car & driving us to the seaside or Mum taking us on the tube for days out to Margate or Madam Tussauds - which we loved. [/p][p]Like my siblings, I was a very outdoorsy child and relished these opportunities to get out and about. Even when at home, I spent much of my days swinging from the trees in my (and other people's!) gardens, building dens & exploring any corner of the local park or field I could get access to. Life was an adventure & with my day dreamy tendencies, there was no limit to the places I could go to in my mind. One day I might be an Arabian princess, galloping across the desert on a beautiful Stallion, the next an Archaeologist excavating Egyptian treasures and discovering mysterious plots.[/p][p]I loved to read too. One of my favourite things was hunting through the bags of hand me down books from friends and read them in the attic. I’ve particularly fond memories of stories about genies and magic carpets, pixies and elves, brave & daring bible characters and mystery and espionage. [/p][p]As a family we were extremely happy in London, but I do remember feeling a bit sad whenever we would return from our holiday back to the relative normality of our routine. This for me was where having some great books to read came in. Suddenly, I could be transported back to a place of the interesting & extraordinary. [/p][p]My father worked away from home sometimes too and when he returned from his travels he would almost always bring me a book. Over the years it’s been hugely beneficial to spend many an hour discussing & laughing about what we’ve read & not just my father and I, but the whole extended family! [/p][p]Which brings me to Reading Force, which is a wonderful genius concept charity, that provides free books to families in the Armed Forces, to help with separation anxiety when one or both parents are deployed away from home. [/p][p]The way their system works is that they give age appropriate books to the children of the family and then give the same books to the parent who is away from home. They're then all encouraged to read the books and share their enjoyment and experiences of the books. [/p][p]Families overwhelmingly report this shared reading helps to keep them close, it helps them to re-connect. [/p][p]It particularly helps during those precious telephone conversations, Skype or Facetime opportunities, where being able to talk about the books, offers a welcome distraction from the tension, pressure and uncertainty of the circumstances; it can ease nervous silences and distressed responses from both parent and child. [/p][p]Of course, there are many other benefits to reading books! One of them being cultivating a love for reading. There aren't many things you can't learn if you can read! We live in an extraordinary world with so many things to learn about, so many amazing places to visit; a thousand adventures to have. So often, reading can create that spark that leads to a passion for life and exploration and an empathy and understanding of the experiences of others. [/p][p]I have known Alison Baverstock Reading Force's founder for almost six years now and I can tell you she is a fantastic woman who is passionately devoted to introducing the brilliant and fun coping system she devised for her own family, during the thirty years her husband was in the RAF. She has a superb team of women called Hattie, Elaine & Fiona who work tirelessly, to bring the joy of the Reading Force system to Forces families all over the world. [/p][p]I'm delighted to be able to support them in this way and I would be so thankful if you could support them too by donating towards their work. Even small amounts accumulate to yield excellent results! [/p][p]I would also like to say a huge thank you to Steve Heaney MC, Adventure & Survival company 'X Platoon' who I will be going with & my fantastic friends & family, who have given me the confidence to take on this challenge. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Photography crédits go to Camp Faravid, Cold Skills, Steve Heaney MC, Reading Force & myself. [/p]
