My story

[p]On 4th January our everyday family life and routine changed and our world was turned upside down. What I thought was going to be a quick doctor checkup to confirm a viral infection ended in a 5 day hospital stay for Emily and being told that Emily has Type 1 Diabetes!!! It was as if I had been hit by a bus and the whole family was in total shock. How could this be? What have I done wrong? I wished it was a nightmare and I would wake up and it was not true! How could my beautiful 5 year old Emily has diabetes??[/p][p]I can’t say I knew anything about Type 1 before Emily was diagnosed but over the course of the 5 days in hospital I had a crash course on diabetes, it’s treatment and Emily’s future from here on.[/p][p]For those of you who know nothing about Type 1 I firstly want to says it’s nothing like Type 2 and is all about your pancreas not producing insulin to help your glucose convert into energy. It can just happen! There is no solid reasons why. Emily’s daily treatment involves counting her carbohydrates for each meal and numberous insulin injections a day. Although being told that it was nothing I did or could have prevented I still had a level of guilt and the whole “why Emily!”x[/p][p]8 months on and like any mum I can’t just sit back and do nothing and I felt I needed to challenge myself with something that to me and to anyone who knows me is unthinkable!! Although I could bearly run 200 metres I decided to run the Cardiff Half Marathon to raise money for the 2 charities that work with diabetes in supporting those with it and also the research to find a cure. These charities are Diabetes UK and JDRF. My mental thought behind this was if Emily can live with Type 1 diabetes everyday and do it as courageous as she does then I can run 13.2 miles!.[/p][p]I appreciate that these days every penny counts in a household income however if you can just spare even a pound it is going to 2 fantastic charities and also boosting me to train harder for the final weeks to successfully finish the half marathon.[/p][p]Thanks for taking time to read my story and I thank you in advance for any donation you make.[/p][p]Amanda x [/p][p] [/p]
