Team story

[p]The Amber Trust was created to help blind and partially sighted children who have a talent or a love for music. Music can make a profound difference to their lives, whether it is through learning to sing or to play an instrument, or being able to go to a concert. Many of these children also have severe learning difficulties; for them, music therapy may offer a lifeline, helping them to reach out in a dark and confusing world. [/p][p]Engagement with music not only gives these children great joy, it encourages them to learn, boosts their confidence and helps them to share their thoughts and feelings with others, opening up a world of fulfilment, independence and hope for the future.[/p][p]There are many examples of the impact that music has made amongst the children that the Amber Trust supports. As a result of chemotherapy for malignant tumours in both eyes at a very young age, Lucy is blind. Despite considerable developmental delay she has an extraordinary musical talent. The support that we give her has, according to her teacher, had a profound impact on her general communication and interpersonal skills. [/p][p]The mother of another child said, 'Music seems to make her world a happier place and the fact that she can play the paino and sing along is giving her a huge sense of achievement.'[/p][p]With many blind children in the UK living in relative poverty, they suffer a double disadvantage. Their families cannot afford to give them the musical experiences that can make such a huge difference to their lives.[/p][p]In order to help these remarkable children we have established the Amber Music Awards, which pay for:[/p][p]•  music lessons  [/p][p]•  music therapy sessions [/p][p]•  musical instruments [/p][p]•  music software, such as Sibelius [/p][p]•  concert tickets [/p][p]•  travel related to musical activities[/p]
