My story
[p]Where I live, I’m surrounded by the sea, the Atlantic Ocean to be precise.[/p][p]I am lucky enough to live in the beautiful Isles of Scilly, an archipelago of islands, 28 miles South West off Lands End.[/p][p]Some of my earliest memories as a child were the sound of the maroons exploding over our house, as we lived 2 minutes from the lifeboat house. We used to sprint to the boat house to watch the lifeboat fly down the slip. If we didn’t make it in time, we used to hang around the boat house to find out where the boat and her crew had gone. On numerous occasions my mum would come to find me as I’d been ‘hours’![/p][p]How times have changed…….now, it’s the terrifying trill of the pager when it goes off, as my husband starts running, kids shouting after him ‘Love you Daddy’, ‘Come home safely’, Him yelling,’ where’s my shoes’ as the dog runs around him tripping him up as he shoots out of the door leaving us wondering……But then the trusty ‘Wives Call-out Face book page’ kicks in, and gradually we are all kept up to speed on where our men and boys have headed off for the night, putting their own lives on the line, to save others.[/p][p]I can remember my mum being involved in the Ladies Guild (it was called that back then!) and when my husband joined the crew 16 years ago, I too then joined the Ladies Guild, which has since become the St Mary’s Lifeboat Fundraising Team. [/p][p]We are more than a team though, it’s more like extended family and where I’ve met life- long friends. It is hard fund raising on the islands with such a small population (about 1500), but we give it our best to raise what we can for our crew. It’s hard to believe that to kit a crew member out it costs a whopping £1598! We have just had 2 new members join our crew, so that’s over £3000 just for their kit, and that doesn’t even include their training![/p][p]I take my hat off to all the volunteers of the RNLI. What they do is simply amazing and sometimes in the most horrendous of conditions. [/p][p]I am running the marathon to support this amazing charity and to hopefully reach, if not break my target of £1800. My aim, would be to raise enough to kit out our two new crew members, that would be incredible!! [/p][p]So please, if you can spare some money, anything at all, it would be greatly appreciated!![/p][p][br][/p][p]Thank you xx[/p]
