My story

[p]Over the last five years it has been a privilege to work as a support worker for children and adults with disabilities for a charity organisation called Parkside. The charity provides a number of day services that caters for a wide range of disabilities and ages. Parkside's aim is to give both children and adults the opportunity to develop their individual skills and take part in activities within the local community. Unfortunately, many of the services are no longer funded. Underfunded services include: the Gateway Club, JET (Just Eighteen to Thirty) and Take a Break. With the continued cuts in external funding, it has become increasingly difficult to keep running these services that so many individuals enjoy.[/p][p]Therefore on 15th March 2020 I will be running in the Liverpool Half Marathon to raise money for the underfunded services at Parkside. Donations, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated by myself, Parkside and its service users![/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p]For more information about Parkside, please see below:[/p][p]Parkside is a registered charity based in Aldershot and Farnborough that provides support services for some 220 children and adults with learning disabilities living in the local area, covering both Hampshire and Surrey. It was founded in 1963 by a group of parents who realised that the support for families who had children with special needs was limited. The premises next to the park on Guildford Road were built and the first playgroup was started (affectionately known as the Peter Pan Club). [/p][p] [/p][p]Parkside’s aim as a charity is to give both children and adults the opportunity to develop their individual skills and take part in activities within the local community. Needs can vary from requiring support to socialise with friends, to participating in leisure activities, meeting new people, developing life skills, work experience opportunities and providing respite for other family members. By reaching out into the community, Parkside aims to develop and strengthen its links with local people and organisations, creating opportunities for everyone to be involved and included.[/p][p] [/p][p]Many of the services run by Parkside receive no funding and we are always looking at grant and funding opportunities to help us to continue supporting the variety of clubs that are offered. For example we run a very popular JET (Juts Eighteen to Thirty) Youth social club who meet every Thursday evening. They enjoy a range of activities which helps with gaining social skills and building friendships. Typically to staff this club with suitable support workers for a year costs £4,100. Just one of the many groups we are always looking at ways to support.[/p]
