My story

[p]Race Page - Thank You for all your amazing support - Please follow my journey during the race;[/p][p]www.racingtheplanet.com/atacamacrossing/live[/p][p][br][/p][p]Not an event a lot of people have heard of..... 250Km (150mi), self-supported, 6-Stage Ultra Marathon, through the most arid place on the planet!! That surely must be worth a donation...[/p][p]The Atacama Desert, five times more arid than Death Valley and where NASA do their testing for Mars missions!! Temperature ranges 0 - 30 and altitudes that even stop the Top Gear cars... πŸ˜‚ Below are some pictures of what I will experience.[/p][p]Starting at 3,200m (think about how out of puff you are just getting your Vin Chaud!! ), I will work my way through vast salt flats of the ancient seabed, massive multi-story sand dunes and crazy slot canyons, covering a marathon a day until the Long March, when its a double marathon (Whoop Whoop) [/p][p]Whilst doing this, I will be carrying all my food and equipment for the week (the organizers kindly provide a tent and water - they spoil us!!)[/p][p]This is going to be a brutal but amazing journey, that will be as mentally challenging as it will physical. I have done a few challenging endurance events over the past few years, but this one is taking it to the next level and that is why I'm looking for your support. [/p][p]My Journey:[/p][p]It's fair to say that endurance events are a big part of my life, but this wasn't always the case. Until 2013 I had not even done a 5km, but thanks to my brother-in-law, that all changed with my first ever triathlon (spot the terrified Newbie Triathlete below). That first outing in Windsor lit the fuse and I just wanted to keep seeing if I could push myself further (not faster!!, a few pictures of gradually pressing on). I think this qualifies as further..... [/p][p]I will be attempting a blog as well so you can follow my progress, will add the link once I manage the first post 😜[/p][p]Charities:[/p][p]Why did I choose these -- [/p][p]Royal Marsden - In a nutshell my father is only alive today following the amazing and innovative work done by the team at the Royal Marsden Hospital. Had it not been for their commitment and treatment innovation, combined with his determination to never give up, the last few years would have been very different. Martin's "determination" is legendary... and I'm hoping its come down the gene pool, as I'm going to need it for this one. [/p][p]Panathlon Challenge - Sport has always a huge part of mine and my family's life, it has brought us happiness, friendship and so much more. We have been lucky enough to have easy access to sport and its benefits, not everyone is so lucky. Panalthon do fantastic work, making sport an option and providing opportunities to disabled young competitors across the country. They host "mini-paralympic" events at primary and secondary schools across the country, enabling more young people to have the benefits of sport participation.[/p][p]Event Link: https://www.racingtheplanet.com/atacamacrossing[/p][p][br][/p]
