My story

[p]This summer viewers all over the world were left in no doubt about the impact CPR and defibrillation have in saving lives on and off the pitch after Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark's Euro 2020 match against Finland. I was in Copenhagen for Euro 2020 and, back in Manchester, spoke to Astley Mulholland, a semi-pro footballer from Wythenshawe. Astley's brother Kyle, a United fan, died after his heart stopped as he played football in Liverpool in 2005 and Astley has been campaigning to raise awareness about CPR and defibrillation. I've given a great deal of thought about the best way to help and, to raise money, will try and cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats in early September. This Ride Across Britain is almost 1,000 miles and I’ll cycle around 110 hilly miles per day – far more than I’ve ever done before. I'll sleep in a one man tent, get up before dawn each day and give it my best shot.[/p][p]Manchester United Foundation want to ensure that all children learn the basics in lifesaving skills. To do this the Foundation’s education officers will be delivering first aid training to school children across Greater Manchester. [/p][p]The training will cover a basic introduction to first aid including:[/p][p]Administering CPR, defibrillation.[/p][p]What is first aid, first aid kits and DR ABC procedure[/p][p]Contacting emergency services and the recovery position[/p][p]Treating secondary injuries[/p][p]Other conditions, eg Asthma[/p][p]By raising £5,000 we can facilitate training and provide resources including a book to 1,000 young people so they can learn defibrillation and CPR, the basics in first aid and will know how make that vital immediate intervention should an emergency arise which may make all the difference in saving a life. If we raise more or less, we can adjust the number of children who can benefit. If we exceed our target, the Foundation will also consider working with other charitable organisations, that equip young people affected by violence with the skills to become lifesavers in their communities, and with the knowledge to make informed decisions about how to keep themselves and others safe.[/p][p]If all this leads to saving one life, it will be worth it.[/p][p]I’ll pay all my own costs, meaning every penny raised with go into these projects. If you have even £1 to donate, it will not be wasted.[/p]
