My story

[p]When I first heard the charity I work for were looking for people to do the Great North Run, I thought no-one would sponsor me to do a half-marathon because I've already run quite a few marathons.[/p][p]So I decided to make it a bit more challenging by adding a few extra miles – 113 more to be precise. [/p][p]Over the weekend of 6-8 September, I'll be running the Northumberland coastal path from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Newcastle. My 113 mile route will include a 'little' detour around Holy Island (yes I have checked tide times!) and I'll hopefully finish in time to run the 13.1 mile Great North Run in Newcastle on the Sunday morning. So I'll be running126 miles in all... [/p][p]Why on earth am I doing this? [/p][p]The short answer is I'm a middle-aged man in need of a challenge. And I love the work of Church Army. [/p][p]Having visited and reviewed lots of Church Army projects, I've been greatly impressed by the quality and impact of their work in disadvantaged communities around the country. And in a recent visit to Dundee, I found myself deeply moved by the dedication and commitment to people on the margins of society - people who are homeless, battling addictions and struggling with acute mental health issues. I came away wanting to do more to support this kind of work. [/p][p]In the build-up to the event, I'll be blogging about my (113?) reasons for running at: www.andyrunsbecause.blogspot.com .
