My story

[p]ECHO (Evelina Children's Heart Organisation) are a charity that support children and young people with heart conditions and their families. Without their support I'm not sure we would have stayed sane during the period from when our baby was born to the final 'all clear' once his heart had been mended. [/p][p]Nothing, I mean nothing, prepares you for the words of a doctor telling you that your days old baby must have emergency major heart surgery in order to survive. Our world immediately fell in. What followed was a 6 month period of shock, terror and exhaustion. ECHO was a lifeline. [/p][p]One golden piece of help from ECHO, to stop me feeling so helpless during our 3 months in hospital, was to keep a scrapbook and diary of everything that was happening. It seemed like an odd suggestion at the time. Why would I take photos of my sick child and write about the constant procedures he had to go through? Then another mum on the ward said 'why wouldn't you take photos of your baby, all the other mum's at home are'. She was right. This was his little life and I began to document the trials and tribulations and the moments of fun and joy we had. I had only taken a few photos of my baby before starting this diary as he'd looked so thin and unwell, it seemed unfair and wrong somehow. I felt like I'd been given permission to enjoy having a baby. I wrote while he slept, wrote about how much I loved him and how special he was and how hard everyone was working to make him well again. I wrote about the things we were going to do together how nice it would be when he could roll over and lie in the grass in the garden and have a proper bubble bath one day. [/p][p]Now we read 'Sam's Brave Journey' book together and he understands why he has chest scars and how well he was looked after by so many nurses, volunteers, doctors and surgeons who all helped to mend his heart and also helped us to heal as a family.[/p][p]Now I want to give something back. I'm terrified of heights but I know it won't be half as terrifying as what all those parents out there that are going through, awaiting heart surgery for their tiny babies. [/p][p]ECHO want raise £12K to fund bespoke specialist antenatal classes and information packs for parents whose babies are diagnosed during pregnancy to help them prepare for the rocky road ahead and to remind them they are not alone. This is vital as I always look back at my own antenatal classes and quandry 'why didn't someone prepare us for what to do if things go wrong??? ... if things aren't how we expect??? ... if that photo of the proud parents holding their new born is never allowed to happen because of emergency procedures???' I know no-one wants to scare parents to be, but let's face it, lots of things go wrong all the time, it's pretty common. There's nothing worse than feeling like your the only one this is happening to.[/p][p]So I'm climbing up 185 steps along with 35 other volunteers then zip wiring 35 metres up which I think is a high as a lighthouse. Not quite sure how I'm going to get up those steps but I will![/p][p]Thank you for reading all this - it's the first time I've ever written about what Sam and we as parents, went through and it's been emotional looking back. He's a happy lad full of beans, laughter and cheeky to boot - typical 8 year old. I wouldn't change a thing xxx[/p][p][br][/p]
