My story

[p]I am going to run the London Marathon in memory of Liberty, who heartbreakingly passed away at the same age as my beautiful daughter Bella is now. They attended the same schools, did the same sports, and had the same interests and friends in common. Liberty’s story is a reminder to us all of how fragile and precious life is, and I am going to try to complete the London marathon in the memory of this wonderful girl, and in her wishes to leave a lasting legacy into lifesaving research.[/p][p] Below is Liberty’s story:[/p][p]For those of you that don't know, Liberty Grace Schurer lived in Chalfont St Peter all her life but very sadly gained her wings in October 2017, after fighting a courageous battle with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare and very aggressive form of primary Bone Cancer. She had just celebrated her 14th birthday 2 weeks before.[/p][p]Throughout her treatment Liberty shone brightly as an inspiration to so many with how bravely and valiantly she faced everything thrown at her, from gruelling chemotherapy and hair loss to limb salvage surgeries, radiotherapy and a stem cell transplant. She refused to let this cruel disease define her and the dazzling smile for which she was so well known and wicked sense of humour rarely faded, despite everything she had to endure.[/p][p]When she discovered the shocking news that despite everything she had been through her cancer had not only returned but spread and there was nothing further that could be done, her greatest wish was for no other young person or family to suffer in the same way. She also did not want to be forgotten, remarkably being the only fear she ever expressed. And so within days of her gaining her wings on October 11th 2017, her idea for Liberty's Legacy was born in line with her wishes. She is so very deeply missed, but she taught those around her so much during her 13 month battle with her courage, bravery, dignity, humour and thoughtfulness and she continues to inspire and touch people's hearts every single day.[/p][p]Since October 2017, Liberty's loving family and friends along with the wider community have been raising awareness and vital funds for new life saving research into Ewing sarcoma, to help children and others like Liberty, as was her wish. Survival rates for Ewing's have not improved in nearly 40 years and the treatment protocol that Liberty received was not only designed for adults, but was decades old. Currently just 1 in 5 diagnosed with the most aggressive form of this disease survive and this urgently need to change, so that children like Liberty in the future diagnosed with this insidious disease have a fighting chance.Liberty's Legacy is a special fund of the Bone Cancer Research Trust, dedicated to raising awareness and funds for life saving research.[/p][p]Thank you for reading and thank you for donating.
