My story

[p]I was 11 when my mother sat myself and my 2 sisters down to say that she had found a small lump and that doctors have told her that she has the dreaded breast cancer.[/p][p]Imagine a 11 year old's world falling apart thinking his mother, the woman who gave birth to me, the lady who looked after me - could die. It was terrible and something I hope my children dont ever have to go through. [/p][p]My mum made the very brave decision to have a mastectomy and as if it was yesterday, I remember the pain she was in following this operation. She could not lift anything on the one side as the operation had removed tissue from as far as under the arm. She was on the mend and starting to remind me of my mom again, BUT they discovered more cancer in her other breast and within days she was back in hospital to have the other breast removed and with it, the hope that they remove all of it. [/p][p]A second time she was in pain, and yet my mother was still able to smile. When all had healed she made sure she kept us all informed of the progress. She had a course of chemo and I remember how tired it used to make but she remained strong. [/p][p]BUT the day she came home to tell us they had beaten the cancer and she was going to be ok, was the first time i remember seeing my mom smile and cry for a very long time. The jubilation was incredible as was the sense of relief.[/p][p]My mother did have to undergo breast replacement operations which again was painful but all in aid of restoring her pride in herself. She continues to live a full and happy life some 35 years on and I am so pleased that times have moved on and that great people continue to do great things in order to try and beat this dreadful disease. [/p][p]I'm hoping to raise money for BREAST CANCER NOW in order to provide much needed funds for research and to make sure my happy ending is the same for those affected. [/p]
