My story

[p]We were told that Archie had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in August 2016, a month before his fourth birthday. This devastating news turned our world upside down, I felt in the days following the news that our little boys life was over and that all my hopes and dreams for him had vanished.[/p][p]It took 6 months of tests and hospital appointments to get a confirmed diagnosis. The emotional and mental roller coaster was hard to cope with. In those initial days and months we were kept together by the incredible support of friends and family and the amazing work of Duchenne UK.[/p][p]Duchenne is a rare and fatal genetic condition. Muscle wastage through childhood and adolescence eventually affects all the muscles in the body. Boys with DMD are often in a wheelchair by the time they hit their teens. By their late teens most lose the ability to move their arms and experience problems with breathing and with their hearts. In their twenties eating, dressing, and simply breathing becomes very difficult and it is unusual for someone with Duchenne to live beyond their thirties.[/p][p]The Duchenne Dash is a 300km bike ride from London to Paris in 24 hours. Those that know me, know that I am not a natural sportsman and I am seriously nervous for the challenge. I am doing this to fight for Archie's future and to help me get there my brother Steve will be joining me as my 'domestique' and we have joined forces to hit our fundraising target. Every penny we raise is going to Duchenne UK to help fund the incredible work they are doing to end Duchenne.[/p][p]Duchenne UK is a lean, ambitious and highly focused. Its vision is clear: to fund and accelerate treatments and a cure for DMD, and to beat this disease in a decade. It is committed to saving THIS generation of boys with Duchenne. Duchenne UK are seeing positive results from the research they are funding, giving us huge hope for Archie. All money you donate goes straight to this cause. Please help us to fund research into treatment for this devastating condition.
