Team story

[lt]h1[gt]Yes, that's right... the day has come. Justin and Jo have signed up to run a marathon.[lt]/h1[gt][lt]h3[gt]Why, we hear you ask? Didn't know you enjoyed running? You're right, [span=text-decoration: underline;]we don't[/span].[lt]/h3[gt][lt]h3[gt]In fact, our usual Sunday morning activity is more b-run-ch.[lt]/h3[gt][p]We're running (26.2 miles!) to raise money for a community in Jogen Babu Maath, an urban slum in northwest Bangladesh. Every pound we raise will support a group of 50 households improve their living conditions.[/p][p][lt]img style="vertical-align: middle;" title="Jorgen Babu Maath slum" src="https://safebangladesh.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/12.jpg" alt="The street" width="450" height="253" /[gt][/p][lt]h1[gt]Jogen Babu Maath slum[lt]/h1[gt][p]Jogen Babu Maath is an area situated approximately 2km from the centre of Dinajpur town. The land was once waterlogged and uninhabitable, and still suffers during heavy rains.  [/p][p]The majority of people live in simple bamboo and earth dwellings. They are involved in a range of occupations from rickshaw pulling to poppadom rolling... earning between 100 - 300 taka per day, that's only 85p - £2.54.[/p][p]Like many informal settlements, there is limited access to public services, it's extremely densely crowded and living conditions are unsanitary.[/p][p][lt]img style="vertical-align: middle;" title="AzuKo Community Meeting" src="https://safebangladesh.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/me1.jpg" alt="Dinajpur, Bangladesh" width="450" height="253" /[gt][/p][lt]h1[gt]What are we raising money for?[lt]/h1[gt][p]The project, led by architecture charity AzuKo, champions true sustainable development. You've heard the phrase,[/p][p]"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."[/p][p]This project embodies just that.[/p][p] The AzuKo team are supporting the community to lead their own development. They're helping to create a committee, providing training in a whole host of disciplines from mapping to banking, and working to create a vision for the future.[/p][p]The first step is to design and construct an urban drainage system.[/p][lt]h1[gt][span=font-weight: bold;]Why drainage... that's not very sexy!?[/span][lt]/h1[gt][p]Flooding and drainage have significant impact on the prevalence of illness, and large-scale flooding can disrupt water supply and sanitation systems resulting in disease epidemics.[/p][p]A recent study shows that sewerage systems can reduce diarrhoea incidence by up to 60%.[/p][p]Adequate drainage is a basic human right, which we take for granted.[/p][lt]h1[gt]How far will your donation go?[lt]/h1[gt][p]The entire project is estimated at £10,000. We're hoping to make a big dent in this with your help. Every pound will go direct to the project.[/p][ul][li]£7.50 buys 4 bags of cement[/li][li]£16.50 pays for a songteam to spread awareness[/li][li]£30 pays for a local construction worker for 1 week[/li][li]£105 covers the cost of running a training workshop[/li][/ul][lt]br /[gt][lt]h1[gt]Donate... and win prizes![lt]/h1[gt][p]To say thank you to all our amazing supporters, we're running a prize giveaway. Everyone who donates before the big day (3rd April) will be in with a chance of winning one of these amazing prizes - Regency hamper / selection of wines / wine and chocolates.[/p][p]Visit AzuKo's website for more information.[/p][lt]h1[gt]Follow our journey[lt]/h1[gt][p]It's certainly not a walk in the park. So we hope you'll follow our journey and keep us going through those wet and windy months ahead, via our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/J2Run4JBM[/p][p]You can also tweet @AzuKo_Org using the hashtag: #J2Run4JBM[/p][p][/p][lt]h3[gt]Thank you.
