My story

[p]Within our organisation at BT, we encourage supporting our local communities by raising money for charities across the UK. [/p][p]This year, our Business Switch office in Leeds have dedicated our fundraising activities throughout the year, to raise money for the Friends of Highbury. [/p][p]Friends of Highbury are a small local charity who aim to make a big difference to the lives of the very special children who attend Highbury School in Calderdale.[/p][p]Every penny they raise goes towards improving the lives of the pupils there, who each face huge challenges as a result of their unique combination of disabilities and learning difficulties. [/p][p]The school is one of only two primary special schools in Calderdale and so the children who attend, are those with the highest need for additional support. [/p][p]Highbury School is an amazing place, rated outstanding by Ofsted, and led by Head Debbie Sweet. The leadership, teaching and support staff are not only focussed on ensuring the children reach their full potential, but on taking a whole of family support approach. Highbury School is where children shine. [/p][p]The aim of Friends of Highbury charity is to work in partnership with the school to provide equipment, resources and experiences to enrich the lives of the children, both inside and outside of school hours – it can be anything that is not funded by the authority and it is a mixed bag. [/p][p]At present there are three large main projects that the charity is supporting, the first two have pretty much exhausted their accounts for the time being - [/p][p]1. School are in the process of converting their old boiler room into a classroom which will be ready in September when school have a far bigger intake than depart us – pupil numbers are going to jump from 80 to around 100. Friends of Highbury are providing the funds needed develop this to become a specialist autism classroom and outdoor area, specifically designed and resourced to provide a sensitive sensory learning environment with kit for therapies such as Sensory Integration and Intensive Interaction. [/p][p] 2. They are going to further expand on the specialist equipment available in the school’s outdoor Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) to include some monkey bars and balance/rope areas, plus they would really like to add some specialist swings for use by all the children including their wheelchair users. [/p][p]The plot at Highbury is limited and is on a hill, so they are currently (excitedly) awaiting the results of a space study to determine what is possible and to make sure they maximise potential – they want to create opportunities to social and vestibular stimulation for the children as well as helping them build on their problem solving skills. [/p][p] 3. Their children, staff and volunteers have been working on creation of a garden school - all of their children respond in a very positive way to the outside space, sensory experiences and learning possibilities. [/p][p]Highbury pupils are fortunate to benefit from having a wonderful horticulture teacher who has been coordinating the development of a large reclaimed area of scrub land within the grounds. [/p][p]So far there is a mud kitchen, den building area, bird feeding and watching site and planting areas to learn about growing food. There is still a lot of work to do, however – there is no workshop/potting shed for use in adverse weather and the grounds need lots of work to clear, edge/fence and cover in order that the area is fully accessible for all the children. [/p][p] Friends of Highbury also have a number of regular programmes of activity that are in place, here are some examples - [/p][p] • Over the last year they have been building an equipment ‘library’ so that we are in a position to provide children with items they need for home as soon as they need them – potty chairs, weighted items, specialist seating for example that may need to go between school and home. [/p][p]They have also built up a fleet of specialist bikes which will require ongoing maintenance, and refurbished their soft play area.[/p][p]• On an ongoing basis Friends of Highbury run a Saturday club once a month so that families can use the soft play, outdoor play equipment, specialist bikes and gardening area at the weekend – it’s a chance for them to get together with their friends in a safe and familiar environment that is geared up for their needs, and they are seeking to provide some additional physiotherapy at future sessions. It’s also a chance for the families to get to know and support each other. [/p][p]• They provide each child with a ‘celebration box’ for their birthday to enable them to arrange a small party with their school friends – parties to meet the variety of our children’s needs are difficult and therefore a very rare occurrence otherwise. They also fund a lifeguard for regular family swimming sessions in the school’s hydrotherapy pool so our pupils can enjoy swimming with their siblings. [/p][p]• In between, they subsidise the odd outing. For example, to the pantomime, or put on whole family events such as their popular Valentine’s Disco and Summer Gala, and will consider pretty much any request which would benefit the children. [/p][p]Our team in Business Switch will be doing a variety of fundraising activities over 2019/2020, with office-based fundraising, to slightly more arduous activities. [/p][p]Starting with a 12 mile hike on 26th September 2019, from Saltaire to Leeds, with the Yorkshire 3 Peaks following up in the winter, then a 40 mile race through the Lake District with a 35kg backpack next May, with plenty of fundraising activities in between!
