My story

[p]My name is Bart Gee and I'm a motivational speaker from Chippenham in Wiltshire. I was born severely disabled with a rare condition called Arthrogryposis (weak muscles and stiff joints). When I was a baby, doctors gave me a very bleak outlook to life but I am actually a very active person and lead a relatively independent and normal life. You can see my story at www.breakinglimits.co.uk.[/p][p][br][/p][p]I am always looking for new challenges to push the boundaries of my disability and in the last 3 years I have completed the Marie Curie 5km swim and 3 Superhero triathlons, equivalent to the sprint triathlon distance. During lockdown I have just completed a 10 week virtual cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats and I would now like to go a step further - to cycle from coast to coast across America, hopefully in 10 weeks.[/p][p][br][/p][p]As we are currently facing a global pandemic with Coronavirus, I would love to do this challenge to support the Oxford University Coronavirus Research Campaign. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Here's some info:[/p][p][br][/p][p]The University of Oxford is at the forefront of global efforts to understand the coronavirus (COVID-19) and protect our communities, both in the UK and throughout the world.[/p][p]Our work to date has received funding from many different sources, including the government, trusts, foundations, industry and individuals. Yet there is much still to do.[/p][p]Your support today will help accelerate our time-critical research, and deliver results as quickly as possible to the people who need it most.[/p][p]Over 150 senior scientists at Oxford are driving forward research across a number of key areas including:[/p][p]Drug development: Our researchers are developing new drugs to treat COVID-19, and testing existing drugs for effectiveness against the disease. We expect to see data from the first clinical trials start to inform patient treatment over the summer.[/p][p]A vaccine: Oxford’s researchers responded immediately and have developed a promising and advanced COVID-19 vaccine candidate. The vaccine is now in clinical trials in the UK. We are also working to enhance our ability to manufacture and distribute a successful vaccine at scale.[/p][p]The immune response/antibodies: We aim to define the nature of the human immune response to COVID-19 and provide evidence for therapeutic applications.[/p][p]We are working with several European governments to explore the feasibility and ethics of a coronavirus mobile app for contact tracing. If rapidly and widely deployed, our infectious disease experts believe it could significantly help to contain the spread of coronavirus.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Drug development: Our researchers are developing new drugs to treat COVID-19, and testing existing drugs for effectiveness against the disease.
