My story

[p]Hello,[/p][p][br][/p][p]My name is Ben Garcia. I am a 28 year old English male living in New Zealand preparing for a long walk down the United Kingdom. I intend to walk from John O’ Groats in Scotland to Lands End England. My goal throughout this journey is to raise awareness of mental health- showing that it is not something to avoid or ignore, to push myself mentally and physically, to explore the UK truly getting to know the people I meet along the way, and to raise money and donate to the Mental Health Foundation. This hike will take place from May-August 2019 and I will be traveling alone with nothing other than what fits in my pack. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Growing up I was very blessed with a supportive and loving family who always motivated and stood beside me through it all. I had quite a hard time in school, however, as I found it challenging. I didn’t necessarily enjoy classrooms because I was made to do things I wasn’t comfortable with. One of the reasons I felt this way was because I have severe dyslexia. Throughout school I always felt different from the other kids. Even the support teachers that came in to help made me feel different. Mostly I felt vulnerable and insecure as I didn’t want to be thought of as stupid. To cover that up I became a very angry child, and I’d often just give up. I just treated school like a playground or a zoo and simply didn’t take it seriously.[/p][p][br][/p][p]After school I became a chef. I have been traveling and working as a chef for 10 years now and I believe it was because of the hard times I had to endure in school that I am able to handle the mind games, as well as the mental abuse that is dished out in some kitchens. A few years ago I took a year off from cheffing to be a hiking guide, as being outside has always been an outlet and a safe place where I am able to connect with myself and come back to my true happiness. With the NGO I guided for we raised money to help Nicaraguan children get off the streets and off drugs. This has always been a deep passion of mine as I know how important it is for me to exercise the brain and the body to maintain my health. Walking mindfully has helped me to overcome some of my own battles and create the life I love and I hope to spread this love of mine to the people I pass along the way.[/p][p][br][/p][p]I’m asking for any donations you may like to make. Firstly, if you would like to donate directly to the Mental Health Foundation, the link I am using to collect is uk.virginmoneygiving.com/bengarcia.walks. I will also be accepting donations to me directly to help fund food and accomidation along the way. Any donations to me can go to my Paypal acount bengarcia.walks@gmail.com. Money I have left over in this account will go directly to the Mental Health Foundation upon completion of the walk. Please feel free to spread the word and forward this to anyone who may be interested.[/p][p][br][/p][p]The most important thing I ask is your concious support to all beings on this planet. Mental Health affects everyone whether we know it or not. I just ask that you be aware of those around you at all times, and if you yourself are going through struggles in life please ask for the help and support you need. [/p][p][br][/p][p]If you’d like to be on my email list to hear occasional updates on how my walk is going, please contact me at bengarcia.walks@gmail.com and I’ll add you![/p][p][br][/p][p]I appreciate all you do and how it further benefits the beauty of the world.[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p]With Gratitude,[/p][p]Ben[/p]
