My story

[p]*UPDATE - For more please visit facebook* https://www.facebook.com/Bens3PeakStairChallenge * Live Webcast during the climbing if itโ€™s not on, Iโ€™m not climbing๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘ https://video.nest.com/live/jFKObkyTb5[/p][p]And we're off and climbing 29 days done - and well past halfway, Flights climbed:3406 Flights Left: 366, five mountains down, Scafell Pike, Snowdon, Ben Nevis, Slieve Donard, and Carrauntoohil. Just the Islands left now. Thanks for all the support, please click read more for the full story below...[/p][p]Moving even better now so I've added more mountains, see the full story at the bottom of the page. The total I am aiming for now for the whole of May, will be 52808 Stairs and 3772 Flights. [/p][p]Hi, [/p][p]My name is Ben an RAF Veteran and due to being recently diagnosed with the lung-condition COPD, and previously a spinal injury that ended my RAF career. Iโ€™m one of the 1.5 million people who have been told to shield completely during this pandemic, for at least 12 weeks, this is tough for us all but especially as Iโ€™m only 43.[/p][p]But what I do have is a whole house to myself and obviously a great deal of time on my handsโ€ฆ.[/p][p]And a staircase.[/p][p]Starting on the 1st of May 2020, Iโ€™m going to complete a 5 Peaks Challenge, the highest points of the United Kingdom and Ireland, in my house using the stairs to simulate the 5 peaks of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland. Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis, Snowdon, Slieve Donard and Carrauntoohil. I can tell you now I wonโ€™t be running up as I used to because of the breathlessness, having watched the other commitments to challenges, I cannot sit still anymore and need purpose in this situation, and the exercise will do me good too! Iโ€™m setting the aim of finishing by the end of May.[/p][p]Feeling isolated and useless, unable to do anything outside the confines of my house. The first 4 weeks has been difficult (for everyone) and with the likelihood that for us, the shielded, having to continue extreme isolation for months until an effective treatment or a vaccine are discovered, I am struggling for purpose.[/p][p]Inspired by Captain Tom Moore and others that have taken on physical challenges I wish to bring some focus on Military charities that not only have helped me massively since leaving the RAF, and are working tirelessly still during this pandemic to carry on supporting veterans alongside the NHS.[/p][p]Iโ€™m not Captain Moore but I want to do my bit and did not spend the time I would have wanted to in the RAF. Leading to a difficult time leaving the RAF, after getting injured in training, and a shorter career.[/p][p]Despite this Forces in The Community, The Royal British Legion, the RAF Benevolent Fund and SSAFA, stepped in when they heard I was struggling with my medical and mental condition last year, and very much stood up to their promise to help veterans from 1 day served, to WWII veterans, and all in between.[/p][p]In this current climate these charities need help to continue supporting the military both serving and veterans communities, and despite the medical and physical struggles I want to help repay the help they gave me and support more of the military family.[/p][p]I feel that this is something that I could achieve whilst in our current lockdown, and will make a GoPro video diary of the challenge to be shared during the challenge, and I have a Garmin tracking watch to try and track my progress. If I can get some help, I may also be able to set up a live webcam so people can watch live, if you like. But Iโ€™m pretty sure it will win awards for the worlds dullest live stream, although please contact me with suggestions to cheer up the view! One friend is already donating a dragon onesie to brighten up at least one of the sessions. I guess I'll save that for the Welsh leg.[/p][p]My trusty Leki walking poles, Crocs, Garmin and I will be setting off on the challange, but due to my lung condition my biggest struggle is stairs. Plus, due to living in a terraced house and not wanting my neighbours to have to put up with me walking up and down for too long in the days, although I have warned them.[/p][p]Iโ€™ll be walking in four sessions that I can manage throughout the day, 1100 -1130, 1300-1330, 1500-1530 and 1700-1730, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday (Wednesdays and Sunday are rest days) if you want to log in, the camera will be on for the walking, and at some points there will be fancy dress involved. [/p][p]https://video.nest.com/live/jFKObkyTb5[/p][p]I can be messaged via facebook messenger at[/p][p]m.me/Bens3PeakStairChallenge[/p][p]Thanks to a friend pointing it out, I should make clear there is 14 stairs in a flight and going down is a bonus, only up counts against the target of 2433 Flights, 34062 Stairs. Which is split across the 5 Peaks. Scafell Pike @ 6180, Snowdon @ 7120, Ben Nevis @ 8810, Slieve Donard @ 5390 and Carrauntoohil @ 6580. [/p][p]Please help me to be useful, in a small way, to help in these charitiesโ€™ critical missions. These charities need the money as urgently as other charities, to support vulnerable veterans and serving members of the armed services. They have seen a massive decrease in donations and yet are continuing to give the amazing help and support that I myself have received.[/p][p]The separate charities have been added to the list of recipients, All money is distributed to these charities directly and does not involve me. Please do the gift aid thing if possible.[/p][p]Best regards,[/p][p]Ben[/p][p]*Update 34% of the target done, thank you.[/p][p]Got the maths out on my rest day again. I've got 9 climbing days left and i'm moving faster now so the Carrauntoohil Summit will be too fast probably just over 2 days.....and then I can put my feet up and have a lovely rest![/p][p]AS IF![/p][p]I just cannot stop now, so I will be carrying on to the end of May as Planned for the original challenge. [/p][p]In the spirit of Colonel Sir Tom Moore and all veterans[/p][p]The extra mountains will be the highest peaks of the Islands, and Island groups of the British Isles.[/p][p]The Inner and Outer Hebrides, Skye โ€“ Sgรนrr Alasdair โ€“ 992m/3255ft โ€“ 6181 Stairs / 442 Flights[/p][p]The Isle of Mann โ€“ Snaefell โ€“ 620m/2034ft โ€“ 3918 Stairs / 280 Flights[/p][p]The Orkneys โ€“ Ward Hill โ€“ 481m/1578ft โ€“ 3039 Stairs / 217 Flights[/p][p]The Shetlands โ€“ Ronas Hill โ€“ 450m/ 1476ft โ€“ 2843 Stairs / 203 Flights[/p][p]The Isle of Wight โ€“ St Boniface Down โ€“ 241m/791ft โ€“ 1524 Stairs / 109 Flights[/p][p]The Channel Islands โ€“ Les Platons โ€“ 143m/469ft โ€“ 903 Stairs / 65 Flights[/p][p]The Scilly Isles โ€“ Telegraph โ€“ 51m/167ft โ€“ 322 Stairs / 23 Flights[/p][p]So, a grand total of 18746 Stairs and 1339 extra flights to be added. This is going to be a push but should take me to the end of May without stopping. Itโ€™s all for a fantastic cause.[/p][p]The total I am aiming for now for the whole of May, will be 52808 Stairs and 3772 Flights. [/p][p]Thanks for the continuing support and I said I would just keep climbing, =AZXQ4q7S7Em0K1G2pX_cR-4jHg_4XMV9UFZDyAaVOgxsOlL0SpnrYVADiZl5HHSENydME313hcy0wEog1MCn9VO0iVNg6mSA_jPQyFkAeQ2BPF6VQ_5AGabGc8OvhwcVou5Y2DkXlNuVBwFW_AZLZmG3KJs0c36hztybeVTgYrNVyA&__tn__=*NK-R]#justsomeguyclimbingupanddownstairs[/p][p]Take care out there team.[/p][p]Donate, donate, donate*[/p][p]*Update - You can't add captions to the pictures but just for clarity, they are my trekking essentials, my competition T-shirt with competitors bibs on (classic) front and back, the 'Route' I'll be walking, and my update trail board.*[/p][p][br][/p][p]#NHS #saveournhs #RAF #Army #RoyalNavy #SSAFA #RBL #Forces #RAFBF #Stairs #Challenge #3Peaks #leki #garmin #charity #tommoore #surfersagainstsewage #mountain #climbing #britisharmy #royalmarines #windsurfing #surfing #snowboarding #militarycharity #military #helpforheros #ticketsfortroops #RoyalAirForce #VEday #armedforces #Bens[/p][p][br][/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rBXMOXzmyFE?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3" nuan_newframe="true"][/vmgvideo][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Hh7oQFOmMk0?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3" nuan_newframe="true"][/vmgvideo][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
