My story

[p] THE 2019 MALAWI MARATH-OWN FOR FRIENDS of SICK CHILDREN [/p][p]A 'marath-own' is essentially a DIY marathon -with no rules-other than to complete a marathon distance. This will be a series of cumulative 'marath-owns' across the world in 2019 to raise awareness and financial support for Friends of Sick Children. [/p][p]People are supporting the marath-own in many ways. Dr Josephine Langton, the chair of FOSC and a Consultant Paediatrician at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital hospital (and who started all of this event) will run her own personal marathon, others will walk the distance of a marathon over a day, hospital staff will be taking part in a static cycle event and others will be taking part in the gruelling Porter’s Race up and down the slopes of Mt. Mulanje. Shrewsbury Morris Dancers are collectively going to dance their own Marathon. [/p][p]Shrewsbury Morris have been undertaking complex calculations of the distances each dancer covers in each dance and then multiplying this by the number of dancers in each set – phew – high level mathematics! What it really means is that Shrewsbury Morris will be showing their support by dancing all of this on Saturday June 8th on the lower floor of the Darwin Shopping Centre. [/p][p]Why not come along and watch our efforts and help us to raise money for The Friends of Sick Children in Malawi.[/p][p]So what is the connection between Shrewsbury Morris and Malawi? Dr Joe Langton is the daughter of Ray & Bev Langton who are the leaders of Shrewsbury Morris and when not working out in Malawi Joe also dances with Shrewsbury Morris.[/p][p]To find out more about Shrewsbury Morris event contact bev.langton@talk21.com. [/p][p]May 24th Update:[/p][p]We are quite overwhelmed with the support for our Marath-own fund raising event for The Friends of Sick Children in Malawi. Through your generosity Shrewsbury Morris have smashed their target 16 days before even dancing a single step on the 8th June![/p][p]We know that more people have said they will donate and so we are taking the bold decision to now double our original target. Even if we don’t make £1,000 we still know that every penny donated goes towards making a difference to the children in the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Malawi. [/p][p]Our heartfelt thanks, to those who have already donated, and thank you too for those who are still supporting this cause.[/p][p]Bev, Ray, Joe and All of Shrewsbury Morris.[/p][p]May 31st Update 2:[/p][p]Yet again we are overwhelmed at the support given to Friends of Sick Children in Malawi as well as to our dancing Marath-own scheduled for 8th June. So many wonderful people who have contributed to help us smash not one but two targets! Over a £1,000 will truly help to make a difference. [/p][p]We know there are still people who want to donate and we will keep this page open for a few days after the event. We will be able to add the proceeds from our 'bucket' collection on the day and any other funds that come our way. [/p][p]Many, many thanks. If you have donated do come and say hello in person on June 8th we'd love to thank you in person.[/p][p]Bev, Ray, Joe & all of Shrewsbury Morris[/p][p]June 10th Update 3:[/p][p]Yay we did it! 42 dances, with a few more thrown in, in less than 4 hours. A great bucket collection and lots of lovely folks watching and supporting us. Special thanks to all of the staff and the Darwin Centre, to Ali from La Bonne Parisienne for her special snacks and Gordon from the charity.[/p][p]Huge thanks to everyone for supporting our Marath-own and donating to Friends of Sick Children in Malawi. To find out more about their work in Malawi visit www.friendsofsickchildreninmalawi.org [/p][p][br][/p][p]We will keep this page open for just a few more days just in case anyone is still to donate.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Thank you[/p][p][br][/p][p]Ray, Bev, Joe and all of Shrewsbury Morris[/p][p]To donate please either support our collection on the day or through this page.[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p]http://www.friendsofsickchildreninmalawi.org/[/p]
