Team story

[p]We are hosting a vintage 1940’s/1950’s Big Band Bash for the Radford Care Group ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign, in memory of Brian Fisher, on Sunday 26 January 2020 at Oakleigh Lodge Social Club, Highbury Vale (12.30pm – 4.30pm). You can use this page to buy admission tickets and/or raffle tickets and make general donations.[/p][p]Brian was a big character with a big heart and a big voice, which he used to give advice, encourage, and most of all sing! For Brian, life was a party and we had many!! Christmas, birthdays and anniversaries - every party ended the same way- last orders would be called then he would start singing - no mic’s required! His love of singing and entertaining started as a young man in the pubs of Old Basford and then continued while on national service in the RAF, where he loved to Rock ‘n’ Roll and sing the songs of his 1940’s and 1950’s idols. Years later he set up the ‘Generation Gap’ disco, specialising in music of yesteryear, war years events and ‘This is Your Life’ presentations for the older generation.[/p][p]In 2014 our family life changed forever, as Brian was diagnosed with Dementia and it was the most devastating journey that nobody could have prepared us for. Most associate this term with memory loss, but Dementia brings with it so many more difficulties that affect co-ordination, balance, confidence, processing skills and language; all of which in turn, bring with them challenges in every-day life that impact the whole family. It’s hard to understand what is happening or where to turn, as the person you love is slowly fading and you are powerless to stop it. Dementia is a huge and ever-growing challenge for health and social care. As more people are diagnosed, the demand for services increases and limited resources are stretched, so it’s not easy to find the help that is needed.[/p][p]Radford Care Group provided a life-line to our family when we needed it the most. Brian loved going because it was about so much more than Dementia – it was a place to make new friends, try new activities (he became quite a prolific painter!) and continue to do the things he loved. He always had a joke and a smile and would go to Radford Care Group laden with his Rock ‘n’ Roll CD collection to entertain everybody! Dementia took many things, but never his passion for music, which he loved to share – so much so, he thought he was one of the staff![/p][p]Sadly, Brian passed away in October 2018 and January 2020 would have been his 81’st birthday, so it seems an apt time to honour his memory - and what better way to do this than to celebrate the music he loved, by hosting a vintage 1940’s & 1950’s“Big Band Bash” for the Buy a Brick campaign! We're going to put all he taught us about how to party into practice and give him a knees up to be proud of, while helping Radford Care Group to deliver the services that made such a positive difference to all of us, to many more people of Nottingham, in a new state of the art centre.[/p][p]Event[/p][p]We hope you will join us on Sunday 26th January 2020 at Oakleigh Lodge Social, Club, Highbury Vale, 12.30pm – 16.30pm, where you can enjoy an afternoon tea, win some great prizes on the tombola and the raffle, test your knowledge in our quiz and be entertained by the music of Nottingham Concert Band and the songs of Jayne Darling. Don’t forget to dust down your vintage outfit and dig out those dancing shoes![/p][p]Tickets[/p][p]Tickets are £10 each (non-refundable) and include your food, entertainment and quiz sheet. Raffle tickets are £1 per ticket or £5 for a book. This page is for the online purchase of tickets and for general donations. All proceeds go to the Radford Care Group (registered charity number 1073938) “Buy a Brick” campaign. Please note that general donations are eligible for gift aid if you are a UK tax payer, but admission and raffle tickets are transactions and therefore, are not eligible for gift aid.[/p][p] When paying for your tickets online please leave your name and the number of tickets purchased in a message on this page and email bigbandbash2020@gmail.com with your name, number of tickets purchased and how you would like to collect. Please provide an email address if you would like your tickets emailing to you and let us know if you have any access requirements.[/p][p]If you would like more information please email bigbandbash2020@gmail.com or call Radford Care Group on 0115 978 6133.[/p][p]Online Transaction Fee[/p][p]Please note that buying tickets on this page incurs a processing fee of 4.5%, so to help the charity raise as much money as possible, we would appreciate it if you would consider covering this cost on top of your ticket transaction.[/p][p][br][/p]
