My story

[p]BigChange is very excited to welcome Midge Ure OBE as our #MotivationalMonday speaker on Monday, October the 5th at 4pm. We'd love for you to join us, please register here: http://bigchan.ge/midgeure[/p][p]Midge Ure's career has spanned over four decades, and he is an Ivor Novello, Grammy and BASCAP award winner, holding a flotilla of gold and platinum records. [/p][p]Midge, along with Bob Geldof, wrote and recorded 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' as the industry's heartfelt and eloquent contribution to Ethiopian famine relief. In the first week, 600,000 copies sold in the UK alone. It saw 800,000 more sold in the second week, and more than three million worldwide. The unstoppable emotion engendered by the project led to Live Aid, the summer 1985 global concert that, all exaggeration aside, spoke for a generation.[/p][p]Midge has continued to write and produce with various artists and gained worldwide recognition with hits in multiple countries. [/p][p]If you have any questions you would like us to ask Midge on your behalf, please let us know by emailing events@bigchange.com[/p][p]For this month's event, BigChange is supporting Friends of Alfie Martin (FoAM). Should you wish to donate, please do so here. [/p][p]Like many charities, FoAM was born out of personal tragedy. In March 2002 Fiona and Roger Martin lost their son Alfie, born full-term but due to medical negligence needing specialist transportation to Leeds teaching hospital for critical care. No transportation was available and after a torturous wait, Alfie was transferred but sadly died.[/p][p]Fiona wanted to honour her son by improving the transport of critically ill children throughout Yorkshire. From this desire, a committee of volunteers rallied to support Fiona and the charity was formed.[/p][p]Eighteen years later the charity has raised over half a million pounds funding life-saving equipment for Yorkshire's sickest babies.[/p][p]Since the purchase of the much-needed transportation equipment, the charity has become the biggest single contributor to the Leeds Centre for Neonatal Care. Recent purchases include heart monitoring equipment, specialist incubators and mechanical breathing support ventilators.[/p][p]Recently they have completed the refurbishment of the LGI parents' room, where often the worst possible news is broken. They have also funded lighting equipment to assist in illuminating the veins of very sick babies, brain monitoring equipment and a state-of-the-art video laryngoscope to help position breathing tubes for mechanical breathing in the tiniest of babies.[/p][p]The list of future requirements is daunting but the volunteer committee is determined to continue in their efforts to ensure other parents don't have to suffer the tragic loss of a child.
