Team story

[p]On 4th September 2018 Big Rick's Swim Team became the 1st team in Europe and only the 3rd team in the world to swim across the English Channel FOUR times in a row. Our team consisted of Paul Bates, Charlie Wheadon, Stuart Fuller, Ross Emery, Ryan Coley and Melanie Holland, with Sarah Oldrey as our incredible crew member who looked after us the whole time. [/p][p]The team completed the gruelling swim in 46 hours 13 minutes, after having battled strong tides and choppy waters for a large part of the challenge. The last leg was particularly tough, with the team having to battle for ages to break through the strong tides around the English shores. [/p][p]Take a look at the memories from the swim on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/BigRicks4Way2018/[/p][p]Here's a video with some memories from our 18 months of training: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm_VeUJFK6c[/p][p]Have a listen to our interview with Daz Hale from BBC WM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avJXQRHuHXs&t=11s [/p][p]We took on this gruelling challenge to raise money for both the British Heart Foundation and the Marine Conservation Society, with 50% of the total raised going to each charity.[/p][p]How the swim worked: Each swimmer rotated during the challenge - strictly keeping the same order throughout - with each team member swimming for one hour, then resting on the support boat while the rest of the team completed their own 1-hour swims. The team repeated this pattern until they had swam the English Channel 4 times non-stop! Most of the team swam 8 hours each. [/p][p]A few other facts about the swim:[/p][p]No wetsuits were allowed! (strict Channel swimming rules were in place - so just standard trunks for the boys and a costume for Mel)[/p][p]Stinging jellyfish - it was hard to avoid them in the Channel - especially when swimming it 4 times! [/p][p]Swimming through the night/in the dark - we had to do this 3 times in the end, as we started at night and also finished at night [/p][p]Cold water - average 16 to 18 degrees. (An average swimming pool temp is in the high 20s.) [/p][p]One of the busiest shipping lanes in the world [/p][p]We swam for a minimum of 84 miles, but it was much further than this due to the strong tides[/p][p]But we did it!! Thanks for all your support! Remember, it's not too late to donate to our 2 chosen charities :-) [/p]
