My story

[p]I will be running the 2019 London Marathon in honor of my mom who was diagnosed with cervical and uterine cancer in 2018. Spoiler alert - the story has a happy ending, she is one tough cookie! :)[/p][p]I think I can speak for the whole family when I say how grateful we are for Norway’s first-rate public health care system. After 10 weeks of daily radiation and weekly chemo (and a whole host of other ancillary treatments and options - yoga, nutrition, the use of a pink mini convertible, you name it), the doctors declared the tumors gone in late May! We are through three quarterly checkup and staying optimistic. We do realize that such a happy ending is not the case for everyone. In talking to friends, neighbors and colleagues, it has become apparent that everyone has been impacted by cancer, and too many lives continue to be lost.[/p][p]I am really encouraged by the great strides that have been made in cancer research in recent years, and have a new-found appreciation for the personalized approach doctors are taking in devising treatment plans for each patient. It has also been a reminder that more can be done in the way of prevention. Increasing awareness of the importance and availability of regular check-ups and screenings is a great complement to the advances already made - and continuing to be made - in the field. With this in mind, the organization Wellbeing of Women seemed to be a natural fit when it came to choice of charity to fundraise for, being dedicated to research and treatment of diseases and health issues affecting women.[/p][p]As my family and friends knoww, I run a lot… I ran my first marathon in 2010 and have been pretty much been going ever since. The 2019 London Marathon will be my 15th marathon. Running has become an increasingly important part of my life, giving me an outlet to deal with both daily stresses and life’s bigger challenges. Running has also given rise to amazing female friendships which have been an incredible source of strength and support. My race and fundraising will be for all of us. To pay it forward, I will be donating a dollar for each mile run between August 10 (charity acceptance day) and race day to Wellbeing of Women… please bear this in mind if we run together, don't make me go long :)[/p][p]The London Marathon also happens to take place a week after my 40th birthday, and what a great excuse for a family gathering in one of the world’s greatest cities.. So if you are wondering what to get me for my birthday, look no further![/p]
