My story

[p]*** On Sunday, 26th April, 2020, I'll be taking part in the 2.6 challenge to do my bit to help Macmillan to get vital funds to support their work at this difficult time. For someone with my level of fitness it's not sensible to do a marathon during lockdown, so I will be walking 2.6km. It's not as far as I'd hoped to go on that day, but I *will* be running (non-stop) THE marathon at the later date. Any sponsorship boost at this time will be most gratefully received. Thank you. ***[/p][p][br][/p][p]On 28th April, 1986, my Mum finally lost her battle with cancer. That is obviously the reason why this page exists, but this page isn’t about the pain or the loss, it is about the hope and the help, and the positive support that was given to our family by Macmillan – and my determination to give something back.[/p][p]I was six, so I don’t pretend to remember a lot from the time of my Mum's illness and I’m grateful to my family for not sharing too much about it, instead focusing on the happy memories which are much more important. However one of the things my Dad does often tell me from those years is about the difference the Macmillan nurses made to helping a man look after his wife and daughter.[/p][p]Macmillan was invaluable in supporting us as a family and helping us to live as normal a life as possible during my Mum's illness. They were there to offer advice, support, care, information and more, because a cancer diagnosis is a fact of life, not an end of it.[/p][p]This is something I firmly believe and so I'm asking you to sponsor me so that others - which for me includes friends who are living with cancer today - can continue to benefit from Macmillan Cancer Support's invaluable service, helping people find their best way through from the moment of diagnosis.[/p][p]Why the London Marathon?[/p][p]In short, I figure you're more likely to sponsor me if I do something difficult![/p][p]As a child I hated school cross country but always had a fascination with the London Marathon, vowing I'd run it one day. I was also determined to be Prime Minister and to travel in space, but since I took up parkrun in 2016 (when I walked almost half of the 5k route) one of those childhood ambitions has begun to feel vaguely possible.[/p][p]Running – exercise in general – didn't come easy to me but I like a challenge and with the support of Richard and my RTW parkrun 'family' it's now become a way of life. The overweight and out of breath five years ago me would never believe my life would be so transformed.[/p][p]So please, give generously to support this important charity and to encourage me with my training to run more than eight parkruns in one go.[/p][p]The small print[/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to Macmillan. [/p][p]Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.[/p][p]If you'd rather support me through a "real world" donation, please get in touch as sponsor forms are available.[/p][p]I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p]
