Team story

[p]Just over a year ago my mum, Kathryn Askew, was rushed to James Cook Hospital from Northumberland with a suspected ruptured brain tumour, caused by the melanoma she had managed to get rid of from the rest of her body just months before. [/p][p]Within 24 hours she was having emergency surgery and within 48 hours she was awake and talking. [/p][p]She doesn't remember much about it, fortunately, but for us - her family and friends, it was an awful experience and one I hope no one else has to go through.[/p][p]Thanks to the amazing surgeons, doctors, nurses and health care assistants on Ward 24, she made an amazing recovery and is doing well.[/p][p]However, over the seven days she spent on the ward, we spent most of our time in the family waiting room - which, in spite of the circumstances, was an awful place to be.[/p][p]We commented at the time that we should do something about it, so 12 months on from some of the worst hours of our lives, we are raising some money to do up the room so it’s not quite as bad for another family going through something similar.[/p][p]The whole family and some friends (pictured above and see below), from Florence who is 3 to Jean, who is 83 (sorry Grandma!) will be doing the Boxing Day dip in Redcar this year, and we're raising money for the hospital and for Cancer Research - they've helped us out a bit too! [/p][p]If this experience has taught me anything, it's that you never know what's around the corner and when you can say thank you and give back, you should. [/p][p]If you would like to support us, please sponsor us, and help us thank the hospital for what they did for my mum, and all her family and friends.[/p][p]Thank you [/p][p]***Dorothy Parry is also joining family and friends to help raise funds. This is not only because of Kathryn's experiences but also her daughter, Jane had neurosurgery at James Cook University Hospital twice in the past 20 years. (Once as a young teenager and again as a mother a couple of years ago.) She received wonderful care both times from all the nursing, support and medical staff. This fundraising event gives her an opportunity to give back.***[/p][p]Who's taking part?[/p][p]Kathryn & Bill Askew, Chris & Florence Askew, Jean Longstaff, Sarah & Martin Cooper, Jonathan & Pat Longstaff, Helen Longstaff, Rebecca, Saul, Harry & Jack Avison; Dawn Johnston; Elaine & Terry McAvoy; Claire, Martin & Hannah Gamble, Dorothy Parry![/p]
