My story

[p]On April 24[sup]th[/sup] 2016 I will be setting myself the ENORMOUS challenge of completing the London Marathon. It’s always been a dream of mine to run the marathon and when I spoke to The Almeida Theatre to discover they were looking for runners to fundraise for Almeida Participation in Islington I couldn’t resist the opportunity…[/p] [p]Despite being home to some of the richest people in the country, Islington is also home to some of the poorest. Islington has some shocking statistics: the second highest level of child poverty in London and the fourth in England, the lowest life expectancy for men in London, and the highest level of depression and mental ill health in London. 11.4% of families have incomes of over £75,000 whilst a further 28.7% of families in Islington have incomes of less than £20,000.[lt]br /[gt] [lt]br /[gt] The Almeida exists to launch the next generation of British artists onto the world stage, making work to excite and entertain with extraordinary live art, every day. As a registered charity, the theatre needs to raise more than £1.5m each year. Almeida Participation is committed to working with young people in and around Islington to offer access to the Almeida and the activity it has to offer, whatever their circumstances. Working with young people aged 5-25, the programme works to offer activity to engage, challenge and inspire them as both audience members and theatre makers. Participation works primarily with the young people of Islington and its surrounding boroughs. Islington is a complex, culturally diverse, socially and economically deprived inner city borough. It has the second highest level of child poverty in London, where 15,000 children live in families where nobody works. They aim to work with schools that have an above average percentage of students receiving free school meals and a very high percentage of black and minority ethnic (BAME) students. In all, they work with over 3,000 young people a year to increase confidence, communication and team-work. Each year, the Almeida invests £295,000 to deliver the Almeida Participation programme. The majority of this income (£200,000) is fundraised, including through events such as the London Marathon. I'm really keen to reach my fundraising target of £6,500, especially now in the light of big government cuts to the arts sector.[lt]br /[gt] [lt]br /[gt] Please make my blood, sweat and tears worthwhile by sponsoring me![/p] [p]Thank you for your generous support.[/p]
