Team story

[p] Our Challenge... We started the Breathe for Life Team Cycle Challenge with two main aims: [/p][p]To raise awareness of the rising tide of lung cancer in non-smokers & of air pollution as a risk factor. [/p][p]To raise funds to support patients and families affected by these cancers and to reduce the burden of lung cancer on society, ensuring healthy lungs and clean air for all. [/p][p]The Breathe for Life Team Cycle Challenge is a community challenge that aims to reach all UK counties with our message. In 2019, our target is to reach 250,000 people and to raise the same number of £ [/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src=""][/vmgvideo][p]Our Progress...[/p][p]In September and October 2019, 70 cyclists, including lung cancer patients, their families, friends and supporters, doctors, nurses and concerned public took part in our inaugural cycle relay event across the British Isles, a journey of 1479 miles. We reached 200,000 people with our video updates and the same number with local radio interviews. [/p][p]November is lung cancer awareness month and we invite you to join us in taking part in our cycle commute challenge to help reduce cancer causing air pollutants and to help us meet our fund raising target. [/p][p]There are three simple steps: [/p][p]Get from point A to point B by bicycle as many times as you can throughout the month of November. [/p][p]Join our Strava Breathe4Life Cycle team and upload your ride to Strava on your mobile phone. Your trip can be as short as five minutes as long as it is by bicycle. Post a pic on instagram and #Breathe4Life to tell us your reason for joining us. [/p][p]Accept our invitation to donate some or all of the money you save on travel to our page to support our Clearing the Air for Rare Lung Cancers campaign. Even £1 for one trip will make a difference.[/p][p]At the end of the month we will award prizes to those who complete the greatest distance and those who substitute the greatest number of trips. First prize will be a portable air pollution monitor[/p][p]The triple benefit to you as a team member is that you will be reducing your own exposure to lung cancer causing pollutants, reducing air pollution around you and getting the health benefits of cycling all at the same time. [/p][p]Why rare (non-smoking) lung cancers and air pollution?[/p][p]Lung cancer in non-smokers is more common than most people realise. 13,000 people in the UK are diagnosed every year, 2/3 of whom are women. That smoking causes lung cancer is a well known fact, but few people are aware that breathing in the tiniest particles of diesel exhaust fumes, smoke from burning coal, the gas radon as well as other people’s tobacco smoke increase the risk of developing this disease as well as heart attack and stroke. Worryingly, the number of cases of lung cancer in women who have never smoked is increasing at an alarming rate. No one knows why. [/p][p]The Ruth Strauss Foundation and Alk-Positive Lung Cancer UK are national charities who want to change this situation and aim to fund research into preventing, detecting and treating rare lung cancers, & to provide emotional & wellbeing support to patients and families. We created the Breathe for Life Team Cycle Challenge to breathe life into these charities as well as to shine a spotlight on the rising tide of air pollution in towns and cities in the UK, supporting the Campaign for Clean Air. [/p][p] So if you want an opportunity to move for something that matters –whether that’s for the environment, your health and wellbeing, or in memory or support of a loved one …please join us. By joining our commute challenge. you will be helping us make a real and positive difference. [/p][p]You can also support us by encouraging others to get involved, too. Please email the link to our page to your friends and family, or share it on social media. Thank you for your generosity and support -- Help shine a light on air pollution and non-smoking lung cancer. [/p][p]Feel free to mail us - Susie and Wayne Eastwood on for more details of the ride or add to this thread. Be a Breathe Life Champion and play your part in helping Britain to breathe more easily. [/p][p]Lets do this![/p][p]The Breathe for Life Team[/p]
