My story

[p]Starting out at 7am on 15th September, I set out to get to Tonbridge for the meet up at the start of the day. Richard's mum became seriously ill the evening before, so he was sadly unable to join us.[/p][p]Fifteen of us set out at 9am, and we quickly realised why it is described as a Kayak challenge. The Medway has very little current, so all of that 29km distance was going to be largely under our own steam.[/p][p]The first real test came at the initial slipway (the shoots that allow canoes, kayaks and fish to get around locks). Three people capsized at the bottom! None, was deterred though, and we split into 3 teams that carried on for the rest of the day. [/p][p]The weather could not have been better, the river was just beautiful to navigate, and after a long morning we were fed soup and a baguette at Teapot Island at the halfway stage.[/p][p]The afternoon stretch after that was very pleasant, but as the day wore on, serious fatigue began to tell. The final 5km through Maidstone centre was a real ordeal physically, but everyone made it to the finish where jacket potatoes and Prosecco awaited us.[/p][p]The day was a real experience, and I'd like to thank the organisers at Hatt Adventures, and the fantastic team from Raystede who transported us, fed us and cheered us on.[/p][p]I would also like to personally thank everyone who sponsored us. Your generosity is wonderful, and I know it will do so much good for all the animals that Raystede look after every single day. Thank you all very much.[/p][p]Brendon[/p][p][br][/p][p]On Sunday 15th September, Richard Baxter (pictured below) and I will be braving the elements to kayak 29km of the River Medway, starting at Tonbridge and finishing at Allington Lock, a course likely to take us up to 8 hours to complete![/p][p]Neither of us would be regarded as 'experienced kayakers' - this will be my first time.[/p][p]We are doing this to raise money for Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare (which you can see more of on Animal Rescue Live on C4 this week). They currently care for over 2,000 animals a year, rehoming and providing sanctuary. My family homed our first dog, Robbie, from Raystede.[/p][p]It costs them over £2,500 a day to run Raystede, so this is our way of providing a little help. A few quid from you all would go a very long way.[/p][p]Thanks,[/p][p]Brendon & Richard[/p][p]PS. Find out more about Raystede here: https://www.raystede.org/[/p]

I wish you all the best for Sunday - especially as you have not done kayaking before! I hope you are also a good swimmer. Good luck to you both. Brenda
